CDC.
There are two different figures given in the studies. One by the distributors of the vaccines, and another of doctors seeing patients afterwards. In the first, the death rate is a little over one per million, in the other, it is around 15 per million. Severe response was about 10 per million by the first, and around 1 in a thousand by the second. Total numbers of vaccines given post WWII, IIRC, were less than 20,000,000 per year for non-military.
In 1960 Indianapolis, by the higher figures, there would have been none or one death and forty-five serious responses. Given that it went on year after year, who would notice? I mean, who would have known 5 years ago that 100,000 a people a year die to misprescriptions and doctors not washing properly in surgery?
1. Trent Lott made some remarks that were very stupid, but I don't believe he realized that what he said would cause such an uproar.
2. Lott apologizes (several times) in public for his remarks.
3. President Bush chastises Senator Lott on national TV for his remarks, distancing himself and his administration from Senator Lott.
4. Lott keeps on apologizing.
Okay, now here's what I think happened behind the scenes (and I'm only guessing, so don't put any stock in it)
President Bush does not want to lose the Senate Majority...because if Landrieu (sp?) had lost, we'd have 52 seats in the Senate, not 51. (Geez, I hope that's the right number!) IF Lott resigns from the Senate, we will be back at 50-50, with Dick Cheney having to cast the tie-breaking vote every time. I absolutely believe that the RATS would make it a tiebreaking vote as often as they could and this administration does not want that to happen. It would just add more fuel to the fire. It would give the RATS something to use against him in 2004, and you know they will.
This is what I think will happen at 5:30pm: Trent Lott will apologize (once again) for his remarks and issue a sincere apology to anyone who was offended by them. THEN he will announce that he will resign his position as the Senate Majority leader. This will give the Republicans a chance to get someone in there with some backbone, defuse the situation and the RATS won't be able to say a single thing. The President is a very smart man and he knows that there is something that has to be done, but he will not allow the RATS to benefit from this situation.
It will also relieve most of us if we can get someone in there who has some backbone. This is just my OWN opinion, of course.
Never doubt the leadership of George W. Bush. He's outfoxed many people and he's going to do it again.
p.s...if this has already been discussed and I am repeating the same thing over and over, I apologize. Deej
*hugs* and continued prayers! It will get worse before it gets better but the Lord will hold your hand through it all and you'll make it ok ...... it'll just take time before you begin to believe that you're ok.
To offer an analogy (bear with me, I have to set this up):
The structure of a mature hurricane has a low pressure zone at the middle (an "eye"). The air flows up to the top of the storm immediately along the edge of the eye. Some of it falls back down into the eye - this creates the clear air that is present there. The rest spirals out along the top of the storm system and eventually settles well out from storm center. This descending air heats and picks up the humidity of the surrounding ocean - folks who live along the Gulf and SE coasts know this warning sign: hot, muggy air, with little wind, and no cloud development.
In most instances, there are other weather features around (other low pressure and high pressure systems) that can affect the outflow from the hurricane. These become limiting factors that bound the ultimate strength of the storm on the top end.
What forecasters worry about is the development of the "perfect" scenario - where no other LP or HP centers exist within 1,000 miles of the hurricane center, sea surface temperatures over 30 degrees celsius, constant water temperature of over 30 degrees to the 100-meter level, and light wind shear aloft.
Such a situation will allow the hurricane to have its low pressure center become fully developed all the way through the troposphere, and will allow the storm to basically "generate its own environment." That warm air descending around the outside of the storm picks up moisture, because it is dry, and that is then swept back into the storm system by surface winds to fuel the system. It is then exhausted out of the top at the eyewall and sent back to the periphery to begin anew. At this point, the only upper bound on storm strength is the weight of the air itself as it descends toward the outside of the system. (BTW - this theoretical limit would result in a storm with top winds of about 195 MPH - this limit has only been approached twice in the 20th century in the Atlantic basin).
We have the same situation brewing with the Lott story. The storm system is a brewin, courtesy of the Criminal Party. They are continuing to add moisture and energy to the environment -- Time has run a piece on their website about how Lott worked to keep blacks out of his university fraternity. Now this was in the early 60s. Imagine that - what Time is implying is that Lott is a racist because in the early 60s, as a college kid in the deep south, he kept to the cultural norms (which were screwed up, but they were still the norms) of the day. What was he to do in that environment? Commit social hari kari? But Time is implying this is the attitude that continues till today. Whether it is or not is not important to them, but pushing the "agenda" is.
That said - with the storm brewing, there are other factors in play that can limit the growth of the storm system, or they can get out of the way. These are the other Republican politicians. If they do not serve as limiting factors, but rather to get as far away from it as possible, then the storm will spiral out of control and consume everything the GOP has been trying to do. It would become the equivalent of a theoretical maximum hurricane.
Do we want the winds of liberalism to wreck what we want to achieve? Do we want it to attack the Nation as a whole? These are the questions I submit must be looked at, soberly.
We must limit the storm, or be consumed by it.
Utah Girl: I read that post about Debbie and Eli and just shook my head. Believe me, my husband and I have had some very difficult periods in our marriage, but not ONCE did he or I even think about getting a divorce. Communication is the key to a successful marriage and if you can't uphold the vows you took on your wedding day, then what good are they anyway? We didn't say: "In good times but when things get bad, beat it"; In health, but if one of us gets sick, feel free to bail out." I cannot even imagine what I would have done without my husband in the last 4 months. He is my rock.
Citizen: how do you get on the list to get a card from the White House? Just curious.
Donate lots of money and sign up to host a Chinese general.
Oh, wait, that was the last Administration.
Seriously - don't really know.
I do not think Lott will resign from the Senate. I think there is a slightly better than even chance he will still be Majority Leader (I'd rather he not be, but I am trying to look at this realistically), but it will be made to appear of Lott's own choosing if the latter does occur. We have quite probably already passed the point where the Republicans are disinclined to "dump" Lott for fear of looking like they are caving to the Criminal Party.
Great! Ask it if it has any good DJ stories since we last communicated. :)
