Well, I have come full-circle on the Lott thing. I guess more than anything I am just plain exasperated with him for being such a doofus.
However, what I have decided is that I am going to remember that gulfcoast6 and Common Tator think he does a pretty fair job of getting things through the Senate, and once again we are having our chains yanked by the media.
What I have decided is that President Bush, Marc Racicot, and the Senate Republicans can decide what to do. I am not skillful enough to figure out how to defuse the situation, and therefore I will let those who get paid far more than I (and whose jobs depend on making the right call) make the decision.
I do think Lott should henceforth be kept from microphones, though. Ha!

The thing that bothers me the most is that I have seen a partial transcript (which I'm sure I couldn't come across again if my life depended on it) and Lott was JOKING! Bob Dole had introduced Trent and then Trent was cutting up talking about how Dole was doing well in the 96 election until he quit telling jokes about Strom ..... or something like that. Then he said what he did ..... as a JOKE, for crying out loud! It was all very light-hearted and everyone was laughing. And now the stinking 'rats have taken it all out of context and turned it into something quite different from what really happened. Much like they did with Newt and his comments about social security ...... when he wanted to simply decrease the amount of increase ..... but the media all played just a part of the sound bite. They are EVIL!!!

Don't worry about Lott. This will pass.
If it doesn't, then we must worry. Any politician who can be brought down by a non-scandal such as this deserves to fall.
That is, if Lott, or the party, caves, I take back all my past praise for him. Lott is -- or ought to be -- far larger than this silliness. Congressional leaders are regularly condemned. What we've thrown at Daschle is far more damaging than what Lott's getting over this. Criticism of Daschle has bitten becuse it is true. If Lott gives in, then the criticism is real. If it is not real, then he shouldn't budge.
One wonders if the "Reverand" Jesse Jackson really believes all this. I suspect he does, but only on the surface. The substance of it is opportunity. That opportunity must be denied him.
