A lot of the freshmen living in college dorms are only 17 or barely 18. Does a university have a responsibility to take reasonable steps to prevent illegal acts from being committed?? Access to dorms is completely unrestricted nowadays; are universities legally off the hook from in loco parentis responsibility?? As I understand, technically they ARE responsible, but it's hard to make it stick.

I think Lott is already done...it is just a matter of saving face and selecting an appropriate replacement...
One other thing: The fact that he said the exact same words 20 years ago means he has holes shot thru in BOTH feet now...

WHen I went to Jr College in MS in the 50's, you wanted to date a girl on campus you went to the girls dorm and the house mother would meet you at the door, go up to the girls room and get her, escort her to the sitting palor and if you were not going to the picture show (thats movies to you young folks) you could leave the dorm with her. You would have the girl back at the dorm right after the show too. Thats the way it was in the deep south.
Porn in the dorms. It doesn't surprise me at all with the morals of this country today. IF a 17 year old girl was envolved the university AND the parents should sue the heck out of the producers, 10 times over. This country is going to heol in a hand basket.

I believe they are off the hook. The vast majority of college students are legal adults. The only "older" presence in the dorms might be an upper-classman RA, whose primary responsibility seems to be keeping the noise level down to a reasonable level on party nights.
Having said that, I can't believe the administration at that school where the film was made hasn't reacted more strongly to the situation.

The men in my family are all the silent types also. My youngest brother was the worst, when he would get on the phone with his friends, all he would say was 'Yup' and 'Bye'. When he spoke in church prior to going on his LDS mission, we were all amazed, because he could talk! For twenty minutes! And we knew which girl he was going to marry, because when he brought her home for the first time, he talked with the family. I can remember us going into the kitchen and whispering that she was the one, because he was talking with everyone.

What do you think of the Blix Circus, Doggie?
I think he represents the worst in European bigotry, that the Middle East is quait and backward, and that no one in the Middle East could possibly be of any danger, and I think he purposely downplays things in order to 'prove' his world view.

Heehee. I would
love to bake you some brownies. You have to come pick them up, though.I don't deliver.:)
FWIW, and not to beat a dead horse, Mike Sherman sez that Edwards hit the guy because he was trying to force a fumble. Not sure I buy that one, but oh well. Sherman is actually more upset with Sharper for returning the interception instead of just downing the ball.

I could rant all day on that subject, Bit. I think that many colleges have now abrogated their
in loco parentis responsibilities. Just what the legal status is, I don't know.
Daughter-child went to a state-supported college ..... she was a freshman in 1990 and was already 18 when school started. That college didn't even send us her report card or her bills. More than once we were tempted to tell them to just go ahead and try to get the money out of her ...... HA! She had problems with her roommate (a long, bizarre story!) but when we called the school to try to interfere, we were told to buzz off ..... that she was a legal adult and any action would have to originate from her (which she wouldn't do ..... another long and bizarre story but illustrating just why some 18 year olds need in loco parentis). She even had to sign a form specifically giving the college permission to notify us in case of a medical emergency or to release info to us about her condition or even her whereabouts if she were ill or injured. Otherwise, we couldn't have gotten any more info about her than you could have.
They had a Resident Director and Resident Assitants (in fact, she was an RA her sophomore year) ..... the problem was that the rules of the college had become so lax that there wasn't much they could do within the rules to maintain order and decorum.
Now if you'd like to hear what I think of that situation, you need to make another donation to JimRob because I could use up all the bandwidth he's currently got available.

Do you think Lott will step down as a senator all together, or just as Majority Leader. Quite honestly, it was a stupid thing to say, but this hysterical overreaction by the media is nauseating.
To: Utah Girl
LOL! I can identify with that, too. The first girl that our son ever talked about to us was the one he married. He actually showed us her picture ... *gasp*... before we met her.

Trent Lott needs to make a statement to the effect that he was referring to Thurmond's conservative policies in general and not to his pro-segregation stance in particular; and that of course he does not now, nor did he ever, support the heinous racist practice of segregation, an antiquated idea which has been forever buried; and that what he meant to portray was his support of Thurmond the man, not Thurmond the segregationist.
Unless that's not what he meant; in which case he should not let the door hit him in the rear on his way out.

What do you think of the Blix Circus, Doggie?Where do I start.
Blix has never found a violation in all his years at the UN... and never will. Note how fast he handed over the 12,000 page to US after telling the world he would not release it to anyone.
Blix and the UN are just bumps in the road while we move our forces to the Gulf.

I must respectfully disagree with you, Doggie. I know that many conservatives are already teed off with Trent (but I tend to agree with Common Tator on that subject) and are jumping all over this as an excuse to get rid of him as Majority Leader. But I think it would be a HUGE mistake ..... it would be taken by the media and the other liberals as our caving in to the blackmail of the Sharptons ..... and if we give them (or even appear to give them) that inch, there will be no stopping. Next thing you know, we'll be paying reparations and all kinds of other junk. We need to be supporting Trent Lott right now. If we want to dump him later, then that's another issue but I think it will be a major strategeric mistake to throw him to the wolves right now.

Mike Sherman sez that Edwards hit the guy because he was trying to force a fumble As I pointed out...even if the ball comes loose, it's not a fumble since the guys knee was down at contact. The play ends at first touch before the ball comes loose. I'm sure Sherman AND Edwards know that.
