The Guild 12-07-2002 Past White House Christmas Cards
The White House ^

Posted on 12/07/2002 6:37:48 AM PST by BigWaveBetty

Written on White House stationary in his own hand in 1927, President Calvin Coolidge issued the first official Christmas message to the American people. As a response to numerous requests for the President to send a holiday greeting, President Coolidge asked newspapers across the United States to publish his holiday greeting to the American people. Although he didn't speak, he participated in the first ceremonial tree lighting for the event now known as the Pageant of Peace.

President Eisenhower expanded the list of Presidential Christmas cards recipients significantly in 1953; the President sent season’s greetings to American ambassadors abroad, members of the Cabinet and Congress, foreign heads of state and government officials. Thereafter, the official Presidential Holiday Greeting was the White House Christmas card.

Artist Adrian Martinez of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, designed the 2001 holiday card which features the Second Floor Corridor of the White House with Mary Cassatt's 1908 painting, Young Mother and Two Children. Mrs. Bush selected the Psalm for the card on September 16. At Camp David, the chaplain based his sermon on the Psalm, which was outlined in the lectionary for that September Sunday.

The President and Mrs. Bush stand next to the 2001 tree, an 18-foot Concolor fir that was grown in the mountains of Central Pennsylvania. For ornaments, artists from all 50 states and the District of Columbia designed miniature replicas of historic houses from their regions.

W A S H I N G T O N, Dec. 9 — Neighbors of Vice President Dick Cheney are being shaken and rattled at least once a day by mysterious blasts at the U.S. Naval Observatory where Cheney lives.

The Navy says the explosions are part of a construction project that has been going on for several months now, but won't say more because the project is classified.

Navy spokeswoman Cate Mueller described the work as an "infrastructure improvement, a utility upgrade." She said they have tried to reassure the neighborhood, which includes the Washington residence of former President Bill and Sen. Hillary Clinton, that the blasts will not damage their homes. full story, ABC News

I've posted a story out of Newton, Mass., which indicates local Jews are not too enthralled with Clinton's speech tonight at a synagogue, due to his kissy-face relationship with Arafat. There's also another thread going about American Jews starting to turn to the Republican party. This is an excellent sign, that a group the Dems normally assume are "in the bag" are not toeing the party line.

Well, the GOP has made huge gains recently...but Trent Lott may put it all in jeopardy. Have you heard about his remarks at Strom's birthday party?

To paraphrase: Mississippi voted for Strom when he ran for president and perhaps if he'd won we wouldn't have had all these problems over the years.

Problem is, Strom ran on a strictly segregationist ticket.
That @#%$ Lott...why can't he keep his mouth shut.

Trent's never been the sharpest knife in the drawer. He might as well have said, "All in all, we'd have been better off chopping our own cotton."

Thow another log on the fire Trent.

Disturbing news on the radio: the E tellie channel is pimping AnnaNicole's "Christmas Special," as well as a new reality show where "regular" folks go on dates with "stars."

I don't guess that it will matter if anyone's married or not.

I'm so thankful my little backwoods cable company doesn't have E!, or else I might accidentally come across the Anna Nicole show and sprain a thumb trying to change the channel too quickly.

Hello.

We just haven't been doing a very good job keeping this thread current, lately. I guess that is a sign of busy people.

Timeout,

I'm just catching up on the thread and haven't had a chance to read other's input, but I have to say I think Trent Lott should resign his position after hearing/seeing his comments played out tonight on Fox (Hume's show). And, our Republicans in both the Senate and House should force him to resign.

His remarks DO NOT represent the Republican party nor do they represent Republicans across the US. He's been an embarrassment on numerous past occasions, but his statements regarding Thurmond and Thurmond's segregationist campaign for President, are totally reprehensible.

Not that I have an opinion on it, you understand.

Now, tell us what you really think!

Let me say this. I think Lott was just patronizing Strom, playing up that he ran for president so long ago. As to his remark that "we wouldn't have had all these problems", I don't think he meant to imply race...he just was thinking that Strom wouldn't have put up with all the sh#@ from the hippies, enviro-whackos, and libs in general. I do not think Lott is a racist.

On the other hand, his words have done untold damage and, I agree, his colleagues should encourage him to step aside. Unfortunately, pubbies have to be squeaky clean on the race card. My personal choice for leader would be Sen. Bill Frist.

I will help with the thread bumps tonight.

First of all, The Biography of the Year is on tonight. George W is the Man of the Year. hooray

Secondly, The Guild mailed out 3 Care Packages today. Thanks to everyone for their support. I will get more out on Thursday or Friday.

Thirdly, I met with some people from the RNC tonight. Bush is pushing heavily in the next two years in urban areas. JC Watts has started a consulting firm to help garner black votes in the big cities. Bush will be continuing his Faith Based programs. It's going to be an intense two years, but we are working on the 2004 election now. We have to re-elect Bush.

Thanks so much for the links JL, I've sent them to fstcwgrl. It looks like a very nice place to live.

It seems that the kids housing costs will be quite reasonable in Cajun land.

That was one of the reasons they decided to go and the private school costs are pretty reasonable also.

That was so nice of you to think of looking up those links for me, I've been so busy buying, wrapping and getting my house ready for Christmas I hadn't even thought of looking. You are a sweetheart!

I'm scurrying around trying to get packed. I'm flying out to DC this morning. Thursday I will attend a White House briefing. I'm wearing my gray pin striped suit and my pearls to that event.

See you Sunday nite.
