I-69 runs into Indianapolis from the northeast. If you look at this map you can see that there is no interstate from Indianapolis to Evansville in the southwestern corner of the state.

To get from Evansville to Indianapolis (or vice-versa) truckers must either take US 41 North to Terre Haute, and then I-70 east to Indianapolis, or they must negotiate a bunch of state and US highways through hilly rural areas. The quickest my husband and I ever made the trip was in 3 hours and 15 minutes, and we weren't driving a semi.
The extension of I-69 has been on the books for years, even before NAFTA was passed. Trucking companies, industries in SW Indiana, mining groups and of course highway contractors, support it. The Evansville Chambe of Commerce feels that it would be a boon to their part of the state and would lead to more clout in the capital and in the legislature. Right now they are isolated by the difficulty in getting there quickly.
Opposing the I-69 construction are farmers, environmental advocates, and those who feel that the character of southern Indiana will be marred by another interstate. Most of the universities oppose it as well.
The route has long been chosen...my husband saw the plans several years ago when visiting an official in the Indiana DOT.
At any rate, hooking onto the NAFTA idea apparently has given the pro-road people a bit more sway with the legislature. All of this wrangling probably can be duplicated in every state that I-69 is proposed to pass through, which would account for the delay.

I just made my morning commute in an hour and a half. I live on the right side of Nashville and had only rain and some slow-moving traffic to deal with, but I saw a lot of cars caked with ice as I got into the city. And despite getting here about 30 minutes later than usual, there is only one other person here at work.

Sounds like nasty stuff out there. I have my emergency road kit in the back end of my car. That is why we are avoiding that nasty weather. If I wasn't prepared,, we'd gett smacked, too!

I was caught in traffic last night for an hour, and the street was dry. Hate to think of the streets with ice on them. Be careful going home.

Sterling NEXRAD shot at 1443 GMT (9:43 AM ET).
NOTE: Most of the stuff shown north of Highway 64 (the road from Charlottesville to Richmond) is not reaching the ground. The heavier snow, which is along and south of the highway (the bright reds) and east of Highway 81 (near Lexington) is indeed reaching ground level.

News-ChronicleBUBBA FRANKS SCORES IN BATTLE OF THE BELLS
The final score: Packers $1,905; Vikings $363.
"Thanks to bell-ringer Bubba Franks and generous Packer fans, Bay Park Square Mall won a battle of Salvation Army donations with Minnesota's mighty Mall of America, the nation's largest. "
"Packers' tight end Franks and Minnesota Vikings tight end Byron Chamberlain spent the noon hour as bell ringers at the malls in their respective cities. When the hour was over, Franks had raised $1,771 compared to $497 in Bloomington. "
"But of that $497 raised by Chamberlain, $134 was donated in a special kettle designated for Packer fans who didn't want their money associated with the Vikings. (Heeheehee.:)
"And to cap the day, Franks stayed past the scheduled 1 p.m. end of his shift, raising an extra $174.20. Fans who couldn't get to the mall also called in pledges to the Salvation Army for an extra $100, raising the total from the event in Ashwaubenon to $1,945. "

G6, I don't know if you catch Moon Griffon's radio show, but he was just talking about the folks who are coming into Louisiana to campaign for 'Brown Roots', as well as the ones who've been told to stay away. Those in the "Stay out of this time zone" include Lil' Tommy Daschle, x42(he did record a phone message for Mary that is supposed to be used to gin up black turnout, more on that in a sec) and 97, Algore, and Carvile(!).
But it's the folks she is bringing in that really reveal how much trouble she's in. Jesse Jackson is coming. As Brit Hume revealed last night, Ms. Race-baiter herself, Donna Brazile, has been enlisted in the campaign. Maxine Waters is scheduled for an appearance in New Orleans, if I heard correctly. I'm sure, if Sheila Jackson Lee gets back from her flight to Mars, she'll make an appearance before Saturday.
It's a mere three days before the polls open, yet Mary Landrieu can not energize the blacks to turn out, and with the President's visit yesterday, you can make book that the Terrell supporters are fired up for Saturday. It's starting to look pretty good for this weekend. 8^)

1. Hezbollah calls for attacks around the world. We've been talking Iraq, Iran, and Saudi Arabia... What about Lebanon? Is it why Syria has been so quiet? Is it why Hezbollah's all in a global huff now? Hope so. We've got some unfinished bizness in Lebanon. It'd be nice to repair this one hole in the Reagan legacy while the great man is yet with us.
5. Montgomery county, MD, has endorsed the so-called inter-county connector.
From the article:
The council, meeting for the first time with four new members since the Nov. 5 election, voted 6-3 in favor of restarting an environmental-impact study halted by Gov. Parris N. Glendening in 1998...
Ehrlich ran on this one. If Montg. County weren't so damned Democratic, the Council would have been turned upside down over it, too. But the people do have a say. Credit goes to Doug Duncan, though:
"We've been debating this road for over 40 years, and now we are going to move forward with one voice."
He knows when to serve the crow. This one had Annapolis written all over it. With PG-County whatzhisname gone, the State will be run by Marylanders again.
Uh, that's good news and bad news...

I'll be at the polls on Saturday, but I have figured out how to keep my politically confused mother from voting for Landrieu. I don't mention the runoff in conversations with her. As long as politics is kept off the list of topics we discuss, she could care less and won't vote. It's only if me, or my dad(he would do well to avoid calling her for any reason before Sunday), bring up politics that she gets all defensive about liberals.

WINTER STORM #2 - UPDATE [Mainly for people in the LWX CWA - Baltimore/Washington metro area and surrounding counties]
Snowfall has reached the SW suburbs of Charlottesville.
Snow is occurring generally south of Highway 64 along almost the entire length from Charlottesville to Richmond, and east of Highway 95 south to the limit of the short-range radar view just south of Petersburg.

I would suggest I take her to the casino, but I have to work. However, my solution appears to have been quite successful in the last couple of years. I'm not sure, but it's doubtful she voted in 2000, and I know she didn't vote last month.

Your 36. That would be a great way to get lanes and same money, its too easy for the govt NOT to think of this. I also think that the neutral ground between the interstates would be a good place to put railroad tracks to run passenger trains.
