REH and Tolkien wrote for different audiences, but both left a lasting impression on me. Had Howard not put a pistol to his head, he might have written something to compare to LOTR instead of pulp stories. But we'll just have to do with Conan, Kull, Bran Mak Morn, and Solomon Kane.
