I've been to BBQ heaven in Memphis....now I need to know about the rest of the country.....

I need a Freeper list of the best BBQ joints in your respective states. I would prefer that the joints be just that -JUKE JOINTS or the like-not chains. Please explain why you like it...ribs? Chicken? baked beans?

Oh, geez, I WAS going home for leftovers at lunch. Guess that plan's out the window, and I'll be having "guess what" instead.

No kidding! Now I'm hungry. I guess I'll be hitting Famous Dave's on the way home tonight. Sure am glad they have take-out!

They had a place in Vegas for awhile but didn't make, now closed, I think!

I need to find a good BBQ place in Orange County that does the Molasses based BBQ that I like.

zarf - while you are at it, ask folks whether they molasses based BBQ, mesquie based, etc, The BBq across the country is very different according to the basic ingredients!

In Kansas City, everyone has heard of Bryant's but since ol' Arthur has passed away, it has been, somewhat, an acquired taste. When visiting, try Gates ( a number of them all over town), and Fiorellas Jack Stack, followed by Smokehouse (on N. Oak), Antioch (also up north) as well as the usual Haywoods, Quicks, Wyandot, Zardas, and Rosedale.

Currently my favorite is Fiorellas in Martin City. But I change my mind every six months. And of course, in KC we have Bar B Que Ribs of every variety, sausage, beef brisket, pork, turkey and almost anything that will fit in an oven or smoker. So it depends upon your personal favorite in meat as to which place you will like the best.

Kansas City has some great steak houses as well. When you are here next, run me down and we will go to the Plaza III Steakhouse and you will definetly remember it. It has only gotten better with age.

You have to leave your culinary and health department standards at home when you go to Bryants, that is for sure. In the 1960s it was something to behold.

Best BBQ around the GA/AL area are 3 places.

1) Best of the three, Dreamland BBQ from Tuscaloosa, AL. Absolutely the best there is, and I have lived all over the country and eaten BBQ everywhere. Only serves Ribs, half or whole slab.

2) Fat Mat's Rib Shack, very good, with excellent chicken BBQ as well. Is in Atlanta, GA.

3) The Smoke Pit, Omaha, NE. Best ribs in a 3 state area and yes, even better than KC. Its attached to a seedy strip club called The Pit in downtown Omaha near Creighton University. Fantastic Potato Salad and Baked Beans....damn good bread too. Get the ribs, they fall off the bone.

I have a non-barbecue Kansas City restaurant question for you. A couple of years ago, we had a private driver while we were visiting in KCMO who was Italian and recommended Garozzo's. We really loved the place, but we had hell getting a cab to come get us afterward...we've never had a hard time getting a cab in KCMO before. We figured maybe there was some sort of turf-war or cosa nostra "freeze out" going on possibly. Is it safe to go back?

I think the Gstes in Vegas closed because of the huge family dispute that it caused...

There is a BBQ place in Glen Rose, Texas. I can't remember the name, (I was in that town only once) but it was the best BBQ my husband and I have ever had. The brisket was melt in your mouth fabulous.

Its a neighborhood "in transition" somewhat but, I take my wife there without concern. Mike is an old acquaintance of mine, I even used to have an "house account" there when I officed nearby. Columbus Park, a sort of little Italy, had some influx of vietnamese that started a new variety of traffic, but it is all adjusted now as far as I know.

Kansas City, isn't a great town for cabs, in genral. The airport up north, and the Plaza Hotels are well serviced, but the downtown and little neighborhoods like that aren't big earning areas -- they know they will 'dead head' empty back to the airport. Have the maitre de call and bitch the next time.

Be sure and let me know when you are coming, as well. We've been known to have a party for the simplist reasons.

What was the name of that barbeque joint in Mission that made the ribs you served at your house at that first picnic you threw -- I's stack those ribs up against about any in the world.

Johnny's BBQ in Mission, Kansas. One block south of Johnson Drive on Broadmoor. Our favorite local joint for slabs.

Garozzo's is a wonderful Italian Restaurant, but we haven't been to the downtown location since they opened one on 119th Street @ I-35 in Olathe. The food is just great there, too. In one of the rooms there is a large picture of a basket of grapes that was taken at one of our friend's vineyard.

Now I'm getting hungry!

Dixie's BBQ in Bellevue Wa. has what has got to be the HOTTEST sauce in the entire world. It is called THE MAN, as in "Have you met THE MAN?" I have had "Dave's Insanity Sauce" and a lot of other hot sauces, but THE MAN is the hottest! The owner, Gene, comes around while you are eating and puts a dob or two on your BBQ. That's all you need.

I'll second that. They were delicious. Bates City BBQ is good for sandwiches and good, greasy french fries.

Hey, guys, I went to see Rudy, Talent and Kit Bond yesterday. Woo Hoo!
