What a GREAT column!! I haven't been paying attention to the NC race, so this was just a hilarious read!! I'm glad to see that x42's hangers on are doing poorly in this election!!

Y'all have GOT to read this thread about the debate between 'Irksome Bowels' and Elizabeth Dole!! I thought about the Guild as soon as I read the quote below!!
He must resort to the Southern verbal nuke that has laid low many a victim, the devastating "Bless her heart."
An example: "She has lived among Yankees so long she couldn't make a decent deviled egg with her mama's recipe in one hand and Southern Living in the other, bless her heart."

LOL...thanks for the ping. This thread makes more sense than the convulated sniper hunt story....And I'll just bet that Mrs. Dole has a lovely devilled egg dish, too. Not to mention many strands of lovely pearls...
To: SuziQ
She's one of "us",,,, that's for sure.
I know a young woman who was on her staff when she was running for Prez prior to the Iowa Caucuses.

Here it is.

Oh, man, what a great article. Do any of you gals remember the Southern Girls (Bless Your Heart) thread of August 2001?
First there was sliced bread, then Elizabeth Dole/Katherine Harris.
SaaaaaaaaaaaLUTE!

Call in the dogs and put out the fire, boys: This hunt's over.Considering every major media outlet in the state of North Carolina crowned her Jesse's replacement back in 2001, was Bowles ever in the hunt to begin with?
To: Constitution Day
How courtesy titles are used is an oh-so-subtle establishment of authority or superiority of one over the other. Elizabeth Dole used it, Erskine Bowles knew there was nothing he could do about it, and Dennis Rogers pointed it out to the transplants, who may have missed the significance of it.

He must resort to the Southern verbal nuke that has laid low many a victim, the devastating "Bless her heart." I missed out on the "Bless Your Heart" thread you're talking about.
I do know one thing, though. If you hear anyone preface a remark by the phrase, "Bless her/(his) heart", get ready...the rest of the sentence is not going to be complimentary, nine times out of ten.
There are times when the "bless your heart" is sincere, but for the most part, it is the standard preface used when one wants to be critical and bitchy, while at the same time trying to appear charitable.
To whit:
(The catty remark:)
"Bless her heart, she just can't keep that weight off, can she?"
(The backhanded compliment)
"Bless his heart, he ain't got a lick of sense, but he works hard."

Lovely article, thanks for the ping! I'd sure rather have Elizabeth Dole on my side.

Steel Magnolia!! LOL!
What a great column! I needed a cheerful read, as I am facing the fact that the odious X42 will no doubt be speaking tomorrow at the memorial service for St. Paul. Ugh!

Thanks for the ping. I read this the other day and howled! Of course, I was a bit surprised to see that it was printed in the Raleigh News and Observer though. Ole Erskin hasn't got a chance!

I suspect the "Major Media" in NC crowned her the GOP candidate for the express purpose of tearing her down come campaign time. They have not been able to do so. If Dan Blue or Elaine Marshall had been the RAT candiate I suspect they would have been able too. But with Irksome as the alternative for voters, their job was not an easy one.

N&O bump

Thanks for the ping! I needed a few laughs after listening to all the depressing news from MN.
My immediate reaction after the last debate was that if Mrs. Dole didn't have this election won before, she does now!!
