more support for the war on Iraq from the weirdo Hobbit/Tolkein fans?
How many weirdo Hobbit/Tolkein fans do not support the war?
I would bet most if not all here at FreeRepublic.
Not to mention that over 60% of America supports a war with Iraq, I would assume many weirdo Hobbit/Tolkein fans are apart of that number.
You obviously have some numbers we have not seen, please share.

In fact, I found myself skipping over a bunch of stuff that I thought was downright boring.I watched the DVD this weekend and found this movie to be so boring that I was happy that it just finally ended. I guess I don't understand the attraction.

I think it's a 'mind exercise' thingee.

I loved the books and the Film, as do many. And I am sure many agree with you.
All I can say is thank God for more than one story told by more than one story teller.

I know that Tolkien repeatedly insisted that his story had nothing to do with any previously written epics, but it always seemed to me that this was his way (albeit maybe unconsciously) of trying to de-nazify the Wagner Ring. Aaargh. "Bless me, what do they teach them in these schools?"
You forgot the key point. The legend of Nibelungs, sagas and Germanic or Finnish myths were NOT invented by Wagner or Nazis. They existed MUCH earlier and Tolkien had the same right to use them. He started to create his secondary world LONG BEFORE Nazis took power in Germany.

Heh heh!

It's been quite a while since I read LOTR in its entirety. I'll have to check you on this to see if you're right.
Actually, my feeling is that it will be just as interesting. I'll report back to you sometime if I get a chance to do this. Hey, it's only 1600 pages. ;-)

I wish the extended edition would come out in theaters. I'm not about to go buy another set of DVDs. Maybe Blockbuster will have it for rental... But nowadays going to the theater will cost you half the price of the DVD; and if you've got a date you break even.

Me too! I just finished reading "Dune: The Butlerian Jihad", last night. Now I have to wait a year for the sequel. Just a few months until Children of Dune is broadcast, on SciFi Channel. I'll have LOTR to keep me pacified, in the meantime.

Truth is Tolkien was fascinated by tales of old and the possible hints of truth they held.
If memory serves C.S. Lewis even used this fascination as part of his explanation of Christianity to Tolkien that long and late night when Tolkien accepted Jesus as his personal Savior.
To: A. Pole
Bingo! The Nazis
also tried their hand at sub-creation, but it was an effort touched by the hand of Melkor.
Tolkien's sub-creation still shines as brightly as the Evening Star.

Not to mention having to try and hear over all the snot-nosed, immature, clueless children and their kids.

If memory serves C.S. Lewis even used this fascination as part of his explanation of Christianity to Tolkien that long and late night when Tolkien accepted Jesus as his personal Savior. Actually, this is backwards. Tolkien had been a strong Catholic since quite early in life (raised by a priest after being orphaned). Lewis came to Christ somewhat late in life. He never became a Catholic, but was a powerful apologist for the Christian faith for many years. Tolkien deserved some (but not all) credit for helping Lewis come to Christ. And you are correct that the power and truth inherent in myths were part of what helped Lewis finally understand the greater Truth which is Christ.

Just a few months until Children of Dune is broadcast, on SciFi Channel. What's this? First I've heard of it. Are they doing a film or a series? I am so out of the loop. But I do watch Stargate SG-1 and The Twilight Zone on SciFi, so you'd think I would have heard about it. Of course, Hubby zips thorugh the commercials so.... If you think of it, ping me or something when Dune is gonna be on--otherwise I'll miss it. :(

I was astounded to realize that most of Hollywood DVDs are not DTS compatable. This is true of the initial LOTR DVD release. I have many DTS DVDs and the difference in sound quality is amaizing over Dolby 5.1 Surround sound. What is even better are the Superbit DVD which provide a higher picture quality. This weekend I watched "Panic Room" on Superbit DTS and the picture and sound quality was awesome (movie wasn't bad either)! If this disk set of LOTR provide that quality then this should be amazing! But I will admit to being s sucker on this this will be the 3rd disk set of LOTR I will have purchased! I found that DTS DVDs are available overseas over the internet. It took 3 weeks to get it but it was worth it. As I just recently invested in home theater I'm just getting into this game!

No, I haven't seen any polls targeted specifically at Hobbit weirdos. Maybe you'd like to share your own numbers supporting your claim that "most, if not all" of the Hobbit weirdo/Fantasy Game/Renaissance Fair types here at Free Republic support the war on Iraq.

"It's obvious that you've watched so many fantasy movies that you're no longer able to distinguish between fantasy and reality! Sad."
"It's also obvious that you are a jerk. And that is truly sad."
Now,now. Don't get yourself worked up there. Take another hit of Prozac and relax. It's just a stupid fantasy movie- not a new religion!
