In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of word for the day. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the word of the day; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....
hegemony \he-jem-o-knee\, noun:
hegemonies; plural
hegemonic; adjective
hegemonism; noun
hegemonist; adjective
USAGE NOTE
Hegemony may be stressed on either the first or second syllable, though the pronunciation with stress on the second syllable may be winning out. Seventy-two percent of the Usage Panel prefers it.
1. The predominant influence, as of a state, region, or group, over another or others.
2. Leadership; preponderant influence or authority; -- usually applied to the relation of a government or state to its neighbors or confederates.
3. The domination of one state over its allies
This period in Greek history is called the Spartan hegemony, for although Sparta didn't rule the city -states of Greece as if it were an empire, Sparta did exercise considerable influence over the domestic and foreign decisions of these independent states: it exercised, then, hegemonic control over these states.
--The Spartan Hegemony; 404-371 BC,©1996, Richard Hooker
Etymology: Greek hEgemonia, from hEgemOn leader, from hEgeisthai to lead. Date: 1567

Yes, indeed. I have safely returned from the People's Republic of Western Washington. I had to laugh when I heard the hotel doorman giving directions to a guest. He said, "It's about two blocks over, right next to the Starbucks." In Seattle, there's a Starbucks every half block. LMAO.
Sorry about your thermos.
To: theDentist
I saw it on FOX last night......Short clip, but he sounded PI$$ED.

"what are a few glass shards in the big scheme of things, right?" Likely so. But have you ever thought that those "shards" are just a naturally-occuring amalgum of he vitamin and mineral enriched water emmanating from your faucet each morning? Hmmmmm? Mother Nature may be doing this for your own good.
ow!.... a sliver...

So that means in effect, that in Seattle you are always a half a block from heaven on earth.
