Obviously, the North's attitude toward former slaves was better... I would disagree that there's anything obvious about that.

In one Southern state over 10,000 blacks were murdered by whites during Reconstruction. There was nothing like this going on in the North. There was a staggering amount of anger against blacks in the South after the war, and a staggering level of murder of blacks (not the few hundred lynchings that people might expect from the KKK), perhaps the highest rate of murder ever in any period of American history.
As I said, attitudes toward blacks in the North were not good, but they were much better.
