WASHINGTON -- There are more differences between a chimpanzee and a human being than once believed, according to a new genetic study.
Biologists have long held that the genes of chimps and humans are about 98.5 percent identical.
But Roy Britten, a biologist at the California Institute of Technology, said in a study published this week that a new way of comparing the genes shows that the human and chimp genetic similarity is only about 95 percent.

Yep. Enjoying the cool weather. It's 3:45 and I really should be asleep, but I had a really weird dream and it's kind of put me off from going back to sleep :P

New figures bump!Yes. When you think of annealing temperatures, you realize what a crude method it is. Inversions and deletions will show up if you chop up the DNA before annealing. But resolution, especially for genomes closely related is low. Direct sequence comparison will give a better answer. Notable is that the original 98% figure includes all the non-coding sequences. Sequence comparison of the full genome will have to wait until the chimp is sequenced. If the error is included in this new number, since it's a guess from a statistical sample, if it is much more accurate than the original number.
Problematic would be too much of a difference.
