If you are talking about some cover-up of supposed abuse of Elizabeth, we'll never know that. But, about your idea that she felt she had to leave b/c of something that was happening at home, supposing that were true, do you really believe she could have stayed hidden all this time, without a trace?

But if it's true (and it's the same as having to leave because of "something that was happening at home,") yes, it's possible she's hiding out with assistance.

With cases of abused runaways I know, the oldest daughter doesn't runaway and leave their younger sister behind to receive the abuse.
