3. It was discovered a man of Mideast descent has recently been conducting surveillance of the Washington Monument, the Pentagon, and other National capital region landmarks; US national security agencies are on alert.
[It sounds like, however, the man was not captured. We must do better on this.]

4. After the attack last year, two-thirds of American households gave to charity.

Day 2 - August 16, 2002.
The alarm went off at 7 AM ET. Girl child, a teenager, reacted with displeasure at the thought of having to get up. Mrs. Chairman had an appointment with the seller of the apartment complex she was wanting to buy, and that was scheduled for 9 AM ET.
It was a typical Jacksonville Beach morning, though a bit warmer than normal. The heat index was already over 100 degrees being as the temperature was 86 with 98 percent humidity. Dew coated everything; the sun burning off the water added to the misery of being outdoors. Nevertheless, the SUV had to be packed with all of our stuff as once we left for the apartment complex, we would not be returning to the hotel.
At around 8:30, we headed off to McDonalds for breakfast, after which we started toward the apartment complex. Mrs. Chairman had to call and say we would be a little late, as we left from breakfast at 8:55 with about a 10 minute drive in front off us.
The plan for the day involved dropping Mrs. Chairman off at the apartment complex, and the rest of us would go to the large mall on Atlantic Blvd, about half way back toward Jacksonville from the beach.
To accomplish that, the kids and I had planned to leave about 9:30 - presuming the stores in the mall opened around 10 AM. We never went.
By 9:30, it had become very apparent the tour of the complex would wrap up around 11 or so, meaning we would get to the mall, get a phone call on the cell they were wrapping up, and have to turn around and come right back.
We did wrap up at 11 and set about on the drive back to Durham, NC - through the same stimulating countryside we saw on the way south to Jacksonville. Somewhere in South Carolina, I said to Chairman, Jr., "hey, there's a pine tree I think you didn't see on the way down." He was not amused. Meanwhile, thunderheads were beginning to develop as we approached the same air mass boundary we had traversed a day earlier.
Despite the intense variety of pine trees and farmland to stimulate the mind as you drive through South, and then North Carolina, the day grew long and it was time to eat. We chose a Shoney's in Fayetteville, just off of Highway 95. They had very nice service, but the food was mediocre. Not bad, just "food for the masses" quality. We left after about an hour break - it was about 6:30 PM ET.
As we approached Durham, a massive, potentially tornadic supercell had developed just to the left of the Interstate - heavy rain shaft, wall cloud, dark blue color, the whole bit. I commented to Mrs. Chairman that as long as the thunderstorm stayed "over there" that would be all right. Along comes a slow curve to the left on Highway 40, and you could actually see the rain curtain in front of you as you were approaching it. Splash.
For the next half hour, it was very slow going as the rain was causing ponding on Highway 40, lots of lightning was occurring, and small hail (about 1/8") was joining in with the torrential rain for one's driving pleasure. The stretch of Interstate I was on is normally posted with a 65 mile speed limit. Folks were doing their best to maintain 30; many had given up the fight and simply stopped their cars - two or three had decided to do so stupidly in A lane (the rightmost travel lane of four).
Well, the rain eventually let up - our hotel was located to the northwest of Durham, near Duke University, so we had a chance to drive through the storm and not have to contend with it during check in. In fact, when we arrived, the rain had indeed passed on, though it was apparent that area had received its share also.
When we got ourselves settled into our room, the kids both announced they wanted to go swimming in the pool. This was something neither parent wanted to do, wanting instead to relax for about an hour, and then turn in. Which is what we ended up doing.
