BUYING GIFTS FOR MEN

Rule #1: When in doubt -- buy him a cordless drill. It does not matter if he already has one. I have a friend who owns 17, and he has yet to complain. As a man, you can never have too many cordless drills. No one knows why.

Rule #2: If you cannot afford a cordless drill, buy him anything with the word ratchet or socket in it. Men love saying those two words. "Hey, George, can I borrow your ratchet?" "Okay. By the way, are you through with my 3/8" socket yet?" Again, no one knows why.

Rule #3: If you are really, really broke, buy him anything for his car. A 99 cent ice scraper, a small bottle of de-icer or something to hang from his rear view mirror. Men love gifts for their cars. No one knows why.

Rule #4: Do not buy men socks. Do not buy men ties. And never buy men bathrobes. I was told that if God had wanted men to wear bathrobes, he would not have invented jockey shorts.

Rule #5: You can buy men new remote controls to replace the ones they have worn out. If you have a lot of money buy your man a big screen TV with the little picture in the corner. Watch him go wild as he flips and flips and flips. Forget the program, your entertainment is watching him have fun!

Rule #7: Do not buy any man industrial sized canisters of after shave or deodorant. Men do not stink -- they are earthy.

Rule #8: Buy men label makers. Almost as good as cordless drills. Within a couple of weeks there will be labels absolutely everywhere. "Socks. Shorts. Cups. Saucers. Door. Lock. Sink." You get the idea. No one knows why.

Rule #9: Never buy a man anything and then tell him he should read the instructions because the box says "some assembly required". It will ruin his Special Day. He will always have parts left over.

Rule #10: Good places to shop for men include Northwest Iron Works, Parr Lumber, Home Depot, John Deere, Valley RV Center, Menards, Fleet Farms, and Lees Schwab Tire. NAPA Auto Parts and Sear's Clearance Centers are also excellent men's stores. It doesn't matter if he doesn't know what it is. From NAPA Auto, eh? Must be something I need. Hey! Isn't this a starter for a '68 Ford Fairlane? Wow! Thanks."

Rule #11: Men enjoy danger. That's why they never cook. But, they will barbecue. Get him a giant gas grill with a 100 pound propane tank. Tell him the gas line leaks. "Oh, the thrill! The challenge! Who wants a hamburger?"

Rule #12: Tickets to a Dodgers game are a smart gift. However, he will not appreciate tickets to "A Retrospective of 19th Century Quilts." Everyone knows why.

Rule #13: Men love chain saws. Never, ever, buy the man you love a chain saw. If you don't know why, please refer to Rule #8 (Remember what happens when he gets a label maker?)

Rule #14: It's hard to beat a really good wheelbarrow or an aluminum extension ladder. Never buy a real man a stepladder. It must be an extension ladder. No one knows why.

Rule #15: Rope. Men love rope. It takes us back to our cowboy origins, or at least the Boy Scouts. Nothing says "I love you" like a hundred feet of 3/8" manila rope. No one knows why. (AGS note: I prefer the 1/2" miulti-colored poly rope.)

Rule #16 NASCAR. Men love racing. Season passes if you are rich would make a nice gift...at least it gets the man out of the house 36 weekends a year...

RULE #17: Tarps. Men love tarps. Big ones - at least 10 x 12 feet. Helps haul the leaves out to the street. Make sure it is green or brown to remind him of the batchelor pad days with brown carpeting and green table cloths.

Good afternoon all...a fine, sunny, beautiful day, again, here in the Pacific Northwest....the newsgal says it seems that we are trying to wring every single day of summer weather out of Mother Nature, before the fall rains take over....its been just beautiful here lately, and is supposed to continue for a little while anyway...

Westy...love those tulips up in the skagit Valley....we have never been up there for the tulips when they are in bloom...perhaps this coming spring....usually when we have gone up to the Skagit Valley, its in Late Jan. or early Feb. to see the eagles...

Loddy...loved the list of things to give men....BigDom has a habit of buying more than one of certain things, tho he is nothing compared to what my dad had squirreled away in his railway container, set up next to his house...

After he had died, and we were moving mom in with us, it was a matter of packing up their house....man oh man, what a pack rat my dad was....

Boxes full of drills, both corded and cordless, box full of different bits, coffee cans full of nails, bolts, screws, washers....probably had about 20 different hand saws(tho he did not have a chain saw, so BigDom of course ran out and bought one to complete the whole shebang)....he probably had about 20 hammers of all sorts, 20 axes, 20 varying rolls of rope and tapes(yellow, green, duct, etc)...it seems like he had about 20 of everything...

And cigs....he had heard that California was raising the tax on cigs, so a full year before the tax would go into effect, he started buying cigs in multiples...probably had about 100-120 cartons of cigs saved up....

And fishing equipment....good grief...Dad loved fishing....but when he went fishing, instead of using what he already had, going fishing was an excuse to go out and buy more and more fishing equipment....he bought everything new over and over again...poles, reels, tackle boxes, bobbers, weights, nets, pails, scalers, tape measures, knives, whatever was related to fishing, he bought it...

And massive amounts of pocket knives, billy clubs, big knives, swords, brass knuckles, any kind of a blade, and he had to have it....we have hundreds and hundres of knives and swords, all left from dad...

So, I may collect my dollies, in massive quantities, but my dad was a master collector of 'mens' things...

Hi out there - you had told us that your dad had lots of stuff - but my word! Have you considered marketing any of his treasures on eBay? It sounds like Al could quit work a year early with the diposition of some of that gear.

I thought that I was bad, but your dad may take the all time GuyGear award.

Well, some of his fishing equip we did sell to a friend of ours, who adores fishing(BigDom and I just dont fish)...dad had also made tons of his own fishing flys, and this friend went nuts over them....so I sold him some of those, tho kept some in remembrance of dad...

As to the tools, well we, still have all of them...I also forgot to mention that dad had lots of machines...ban saws, grinders, lathes, etc...we still have all of them...BigDom thinks he will need all of that stuff someday...

As to the knives and blades and such....many of the knives, which were in pristine condtion, were given to favorite friends, and nephews in remembrance of dad...we have kept the rest...Both Andy and Bigdom love knives, so they have kept all of them for themselves...

Somehow, it just does not seem right to sell that stuff...we have given much of it away, to friends, and family, that especially were fond of my dad, or who my dad had a special place in his heart for...and friends of ours, who have admired much of dads stuff, have been allowed to purchase some pieces, but for really very little...I was always of the mind, as was dad, that when someone really admired something of yours, and you were willing to part with it, you just gave it to them...but a lot of my friends would not take it free, so I just charged them a nominal fee...

Poor Andy, when BigDom and I die, he will have most of my mom and dads stuff, along with BigDoms collections, my own collections of various things, the biggie being my dolls....

But for the most part, I just dont have the heart to sell this stuff...

I understand exactly what you're saying about the sentiments involved. I've seen some lovely shadow boxes featuring fishing flies and other lures - that could be a way to both preserve and display your dad's talents. bbl

Yes, you are right about creating shadow boxes...that is something I have thought about....Dad had a big flat box, and when I opened it up, it was full of old, various sized and shaped 'skeleton' keys....I thought, good grief, what an odd collection....years later tho, I saw a lovely shadow box created, with nothing but skeleton keys as the focal point....so I have kept that picture, and someday intend to make some shadow boxes, of dads things....

One other thing dad collected, that I forgot to mention, was rubber stamps...he probably had over 1000....Andy took those he wanted, aunt helen, ,and her kids and grandkids took some, the daughter of one of my friends took some, and a friend fo mine down the block went crazy over them....

She wanted to take about 100 of them, and she made a lovely display case, full of nothing but rubber stamps...she insisted on paying me, a handsome sum for them, and it was the only way she would take them.....after she died, her son, came down and told me how much pleasure she got out of those rubber stamps, the fun she had making a display for them....he said, he was going to display it in his own home, as it was such a conversation piece, and it gave his mom such pleasure....my dad would have been so proud, and I could see him beaming now, knowing that after he left this earth, there were so many people made so happy by having some of his things...

Hey Mom.. Your mentioning your Father's drills brought my daughter to mind. She went to put up all the new shades she bought for the house yesterday, and she jammed her battery operated one. She went to get the electric one and couldn't find it so had to borrow her neighbors.

Guess where her electric one went? Her husband threw it out because she had the battery one.. When that man cleans, he really cleans.. Talk about anal.. lol

Well, he'll be cleaning his own place now.. ;( ;) He can throw anything out he likes.. lol
