Spencer Dixon doesn't look thin, athletic, or dark, and probably doesn't have a WHITE BASEBALL HAT, a blue SUV, or a red, white & blue tatoo.

What about the Honda/Toyota or whatever it was?

A volunteer searcher named Chad, who asked that his last name not be used, told authorities he saw the suspicious man about 6 p.m. and watched him for about 30 minutes. The closest he came to the man was about 150 to 200 feet.

"I saw his tattoo on his right shoulder. It was red, green and blue," Chad said.

The man was walking by himself but vanished when someone, possibly another searcher, yelled, "Hey, hey, hey," Chad said. Minutes later, Chad heard two gunshots and then footsteps about 10 feet above where he was standing.

"I was so scared. I told my brother not to radio me," Chad said.

His brother on Pinecrest Road had told others in the search party about the sighting, and they called authorities.

Matt Duven, 19, was with two friends in another area above Pinecrest. They heard about the sighting over the radio and tried to intercept the man.

"We thought we heard branches break. That's when we saw him coming over the ridge," Duven said.

His two friends decided to instead descend to the road and fetch sheriff's officers. Duven stayed by himself to keep an eye on the man, who apparently had stopped walking.

"He kept walking back and forth in a 25-foot area. Then he would sit down," Duven said. "I assume he was waiting for night to run away."

Duven also said he heard about nine gunshots. "It was two here, one there," he said.

About 25 minutes later it was dark, and Duven said he couldn't see the man.

"If this is the suspect, we know he is armed, so they were very smart not to go in there and follow him," said Salt Lake County sheriff's deputy Peggy Faulkner.

Note - pretty specific description for being a hoax.

Authorities investigating Elizabeth's disappearance say there appears to be no link with the incident in Fairview Canyon on June 9, but they are continuing to keep an eye on the investigation. "We're still looking at it," said Salt Lake police Lt. Cory Lyman.

"We sent detectives and FBI officers down there," said Sgt. Fred Louis, spokesman for the Salt Lake police. "There is nothing significant."

Three or four days after Elizabeth's June 5 kidnapping, two hikers who were looking for a campsite spotted the man digging a rectangular hole near some overhanging bushes in Fairview Canyon near Manti. When the hikers asked what he was doing, the man said he was digging a pit to roast a pig. The hikers left but considered the situation suspicious because the location was so close to the bushes. When they returned, the man was gone. They called law enforcement officials, who searched the area and found nothing. Between 50 and 60 volunteers also searched the area on Saturday.

In some articles it said Jun 9 and in some 3-4 days after the kidnapping. Makes me wonder if they're trying to be obscure on the date for some reason.

Spencer Dixon doesn't look thin, athletic, or dark, and probably doesn't have a WHITE BASEBALL HAT, an older model blue SUV, an older model white/silver/gray Honda/Nissan, or a red, white & blue tatoo.

I doubt if the idle talk of people on an internet thread really did any harm to Ricci. Just as the idle talk of people on an internet thread has probably not harmed the Smarts, since people know it's just idle speculation.

Have YOU always kept the presumption of innocence in mind when considering whether any of the Smarts may have done this?

Well, at least you've seen one of them, Sherlock.

It's a good thing the alleged abductor was described as having worn a shirt--or Mr. Morse might be among those suspected.

Thank you for saying it!!

NOBODY known to the people on these internet forums has gotten a free pass--nobody.

Except perhaps Elizabeth. I don't blame a 14-yr-old girl for doing something ill-judged, but I admit I've wondered if she was fooled into going out of the house without a struggle.

Deseret News - June 17

Police have examined surveillance footage of a suspicious car spotted at Shriners Hospital moments before Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped from her Federal Heights home.

Fred Trujillo, assistant director of security for Shriners Hospital, told the Deseret News he saw a suspicious-looking car pull into the parking lot at Shriners Hospital just before 1 a.m. June 5.

Elizabeth was kidnapped from her home between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. the same morning, and Shriners Hospital is located just half a mile from the Smart home near 1500 E. Kristianna Circle (420 North).

"There were several coincidences that occurred that night," Trujillo said.

Police, however, have not established any connection between the car and Elizabeth's kidnapping.

"Detectives said they viewed the tape," Salt Lake Police Sgt. Fred Louis said. "They talked to him (Trujillo). They didn't find anything significant."

Later in the month of course they sent the video to the FBI lab to make stills of clear shots of the cars to make measurements and determine their makes & models.

Of course. For the umteenth time, I'll say I do NOT believe the family abducted her or harmed her. I do think it's possible they know more about who MIGHT have, than they are admitting. (Maybe they suspect the former bishop)?

Of course all this assumes she was abducted. I'm not quite ready to concede that. Still think runaway is possible-- but maybe didn't turn out like she thought.

You know us vitriolic harpies -- we just keep looking beyond the obvious.

Smart Family Turns Attention to Suspicious Digging

Wednesday, September 4, 2002

BY ASHLEY BROUGHTON THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

The family of Elizabeth Smart asked the public's help Tuesday in finding a man involved in a suspicious incident in Sanpete County shortly after the 14-year-old was abducted from her Salt Lake City home.

Authorities investigating Elizabeth's disappearance say there appears to be no link with the incident in Fairview Canyon on June 9, but they are continuing to keep an eye on the investigation. "We're still looking at it," said Salt Lake police Lt. Cory Lyman.

Two hikers looking for Boy Scout campsites encountered a man digging a hole in the Manti-La Sal National Forest.

The man, described as 5-feet-8 or 5-feet-9 with dark hair and a dark complexion, told the hikers he was digging the hole to barbecue a pig, David Smart said. The hikers reported the man was sweating and seemed nervous.

After moving on, the hikers realized a bush was hanging over the hole, and any attempt to roast a pig would have meant setting the bush on fire. When they returned, the man was gone. One of the hikers was an artist who made a composite sketch of the man shortly afterward.

The hikers described the man as being of medium build, 35 to 40 years old, wearing bluejeans and a white or light-colored baseball cap, according to an article in the Manti Messenger-Enterprise. He apparently was driving an older, blue sport utility vehicle.

"We don't know the significance of it," Ed Smart, Elizabeth's father, said Tuesday. "It's highly, highly suspicious."

Family members said they were aware of the incident at the time, but had moved on to other leads. The family organized a search of the area Saturday. Sanpete County Sheriff Claude Pickett said deputies found the spot where the hikers first reported the man digging but found no evidence, Pickett said.

The Sheriff's Office contacted the FBI and Salt Lake City police about the search of the area.

"We sent detectives and FBI officers down there," said Sgt. Fred Louis, spokesman for the Salt Lake police. "There is nothing significant."

Your Post 350 was well-said, and I agree with every word of it.

Yes, it's perfectly logical for us curious people to get a little background into the culture that provided the backdrop for this mystery. But how many times must the same point, or allegation, be repeated? We get it, already: corruption and cover-up can take place within any group. How many times must certain posters beat everyone over the head with it?

Larkin coordinated the fruitless search for a suspicious man searchers said they spotted at about 7:30 p.m. trying to cover up his footprints on a trail in the steep canyon. They also said they heard gunshots moments later. Volunteer searchers stuck by their story Friday and said they could not understand how he had slipped the extensive dragnet. But by Friday, police expressed doubts about the volunteers' account. A backcountry SWAT team "looked everywhere they could look and there was nothing to find up there," said sheriff's office spokeswoman Peggy Faulkner. Larkin surmised that the man volunteer searchers saw was a innocent man enjoying a late afternoon hike.
