Elizabeth Smart thread, August 31-September 7, 2002

Posted on 08/31/2002 10:26:34 AM PDT by IamHD

My prayers go out to the Ricci family during this time. RR was sent up the river and used as a scape-goat. No evidence, whatsoever, linking him to the disappearance of Elizabeth.

May he rest in peace.

I read it Holmes, subsequent news reports reported that this was a hoax.

Also in the disclaimer article I read Fred Louis said they didn't even bother sending anyone out there, then he said his famous line 'it was nothing.' It was something, sandude. Actually the police didn't go out there, the sheriff's department handled the search with their helicopters. The guy was spotted between 7:00-7:30 PM so it was almost dark. I can't find one article in Brigette's archives where the police disclaim this incident.

I'm trying to find the reference on this Chad Woodruff, his brother, and Matt Duven seeing the alleged guy up Emigration Canyon. Really, the tip was discounted, their story fell apart upon further examination. I want to search the Deseret News, but their archive search has been down today. I can remember thinking that those yahoos had misdirected the search for their own aggrandizement.

250+ pages of what?

the tip was discounted...

The also discounted the cars in the Shriner's Hospital parking lot, Fred Louis said 'they were nothing', then they sent the footage to the FBI crime lab in Quantico, VA for still shots of both vehicles to do measurements to determine their make & model.

Get technical, why dontcha. O.K. I've only read from post #501 to 723 tonight.

You're getting too excited over nothing. There must be thousands of blue vans in Utah, & I would hesitate to guess how many men wear white baseball caps.

Has anybody (Moul) said if it's a dark blue van, light blue, metallic, etc.? I don't think so.

How can someone named Chad Woodruff be a brother of someone named Matt Duven? And they were a mile apart and both saw the guy.

Put your money where your mouth is, lakey. 5 bucks says the kidnapper wore a white baseball hat and had access to a blue van. (I think he also had access to a Honda).

Sorry, Chad Woodruff and his brother whose name I can't remember right now were the ones who initially saw the alleged guy. Matt Duven stood guard while the Woodruffs ran down the hill to notify someone. Sorry, I can't find the source discounting their story, I heard it both on the news and read it somewhere. When the DN search archive comes back, I will search there. Otherwise, well, otherwise sandude, whenigettime, and I have the same memory of the story. Pretty good odds that the info is right.

If that hole-digging, pig-roasting man was so suspicious, where's his vehicle's license plate number? 250+ pages, & I see no reference to it.

LOL... yeah, one might think someone would have copied a plate number.

Oh no you don't! The white baseball cap is practically a sure thing.

I pass on the blue van though. So, I'll bet you $2.50.

Lakey, a major, major point is that Ed Smart said in a SLC TV interview today that he does not believe Richard Ricci was in his house the night of the alleged kidnapping. With that statement, he exonerated Ricci, because MK supposed recognized the voice of whoever was there.

Too bad he didn't say that before Ricci died last Friday in prison, possibly because of lack of medical care.

They certainly would have gotten a license plate number.

He said he contacted his brother by radio, and the police were called in. But by then, the man had fled.

Another searcher reported hearing gunshots shortly afterwards.

Salt Lake County sheriffs closed the canyon and set up a perimeter around it, and searching from a helicopter with an infrared sensor. The FAA restricted the airspace above the canyon

All they spotted from the air were several deer, and county sheriff's deputies and volunteers resumed the ground search at 6 a.m., local time.

Atkinson said that the police department was not involved in the search of the canyon, and instead focused on investigating the thousands of tips that have been called in.

"I don't think it's any more promising than anything else that we had, that we're taking other resources to go after that," he said. "Again, I think it's just another lead."

Searchers say the suspicious man was wearing a white baseball hat, tan denim jackets and white pants — clothing Smart's 9-year-old sister, who was in the room when she was taken, said the kidnapper was wearing.

"They are currently still in the canyon looking for that person," Atkinson said. "At this point they've been unable to locate that person."

Shriner's Hospital parking lot

Fred Trujillo said he saw the profile of the driver of the 1st suspicious car from 20 feet, he had short dark hair and was wearing a tan denim jacket and he was driving a white or silver Honda. He said he did not see a moustache on him and if he had one it could not have been bushy like Ricci's.

Oh, I heard the same story too but I didn't believe it then and don't believe it now, just like I didn't believe it when they said the cars in the Shriner's parking lot were nothing.

Ed Smart NEVER said he thought Ricci went into the house. It is only sandude that has had that idea. I have continually told sandude Ed says that Ricci was involved and points to the muddy Jeep trip and the guy that he left Moul's with that he won't answer police' questions on. You need to listen up to what's going on varina.

Pardon, Sherlock, but Ed Smart did at least intimate that Ricci came into his home..."if he came in & burglarized once, he had the nerve to take Elizabeth." On t.v. & not long ago.

Police are also investigating a report of a suspicious car that was seen by a milkman in the neighborhood two days before the kidnapping, Atkinson said.

The milkman said he saw a gray Honda or Nissan with a license plate that read "266 RDA," but searches of state motor vehicle department records turned up no match for a car of either make with a license resembling the one reported, Atkinson said.

I also heard Charlie Miller the milkman on a television interview say Edmunds could not have been the guy he saw because he was much smaller, thin and had dark hair and was wearing a WHITE BASEBALL HAT. He said it had been over a week and the police had never interviewed him. And this guy saw the man in broad daylight at 7:00 AM. NO INTERVIEW, NO SKETCH ARTIST!!!
