My prayers go out to the Ricci family during this time. RR was sent up the river and used as a scape-goat. No evidence, whatsoever, linking him to the disappearance of Elizabeth.

I think that LE would have smoked them out long ago. While it is still possible, the odds of a family member being involved in this case are very very small and getting smaller. Those odds were much higher in the early going but continue to diminish over time. Of course if you think that the police are incompetent or corrupt then you might come to a different conclusion. I've seen nothing to show either stupidity or corruption by LE so far.
Or even that she might have had a crush on someone and gone willingly and staged the "kidnapping?"

Not all 14 year old girls. I've raised 3 girls who are high school age and beyond. Only one of them showed an interest in boys at 14. Nothing in the public record about Elizabeth indicates that she had an interest in boys at this time. Have you ever known a 14 year old girl who wasn't very interested in boys? There are plenty of them out there.
So what's changed that we are now hearing about it? She's still missing.

If the Smarts had been quiet like the Ramseys they would be criticized. Because they speak up at every opportunity they are criticized. To an all-purpose critic, they can't win.
In your zeal to criticize Smart you are totally missing the possible link between blue van and blue SUV - a connection that none of us knew about several days ago. Ed probably didn't know about it either.

I don't know. I was just giving you a possible reason for not releasing that to the public. There is always a kind of cost/benefit equation in these kinds of decisions.

What's up with this, sandude, that this poor family has to put out pictures drawn by amateurs to try to find out who took their daughter? Why didn't the SLCPD have a professional sketch artist draw this? Do you think SLCPD doesn't know who this is? Who are they trying to protect?

Or will they be found by the police. They've gone out of their way this last week to emphasize they have NOTHING to show for 3 months in investigation. Here is that same guy with the white baseball cap I've been talking about for months that has been seen by everybody and his uncle and SLCPD refuses to make a sketch of this guy or just release his photograph. This is the kidnapper folks! They know who it is! Is this guy Hinckley's grandson or what?

And I remember Ed Smart and also Cynthia Smart Owens saying that they didn't care if the media was on their personal lives, "let the media chew us up and spit us out, we are focused on getting Elizabeth back." I believe is the gist of what Cynthia said in response to questions about the Smart family being investigated by the SLPD, the polygraphs, etc. And the SLPD cannot rule anyone out, family, friends, or strangers. Officially they haven't, unofficially I do not know.
Sorry, I don't get your reference to "when they are asking for something they aren't entitled to." Is that in reference to TV face time? Getting Elizabeth back? Having the conversations released between Richard Ricci and his attorney(s)? What?

The sketch may have not gotten any better with a profesional artist. I think that LE probably felt this lead would not bear fruit. The Smarts felt otherwise and released it. They may have had LE's blessing, it's hard to tell.
