Yesterday, I got a letter from Social Security, informing me of my retirement fund total, my disability totals, and other such stuff...

I am always amused by this letter for it states what I will collect at age 62, 66, and 70...now both Bigdom and I have figured out that its more worthwhile to collect beginning at age 62, even tho the numbers at age 66 and 70 are so much more inticing....

But smart Aunt Helen, long ago, advised us, that when we got such a letter, do the calculations for collecting at age 62, and then take that total and see how long it would take for us to make up for that money, if we waited until we were 66 to collect...it takes an average of 12 yrs, to make up that difference...Heck, that would take a person to age 74, and there is no guarantee that a person will or will not live to that age....

Of course, Social Security never informs anyone of that fact...they do, and rightfully so, leave it up to the individual to decide when he wants to collect...

But many people dont take the time to do the math, thinking they will just wait until 65, or 66, depending on your situation, because they will collect so much more per month...

Give me money as soon as possible, Man....I want to go out in style...

Freepers are generally smarter than your average bears. ALWAYS take the money and run - same deal as with the lotto payouts from the government, and I hope that not too many of us fall for this most voluntary of all taxes. My SS letter last week was plenty amusing to me. They were all concerned that I sould go greet at WalMart, or something, as my check would only be $600/month or so based on past extortions contributions. What the geniuses don't realize is that the IRS, for whatever reason doesn't count my rental income, as earned income, so there is no Social Security involvment. Going out in style is a good thing.
