Rather than taking a skeptical view point and wondering if the person is full of crap, they assume he's genuine and start running with it.

I've found just the opposite to be true. Most if not all of the true scientists and mathematicians I've personally met are hardcore skeptics themselves, and aren't easily fooled about ANYTHING.

Given the "revolutions" science has gone thorugh in my life time (only to find out in a couple of weeks that it was a bad magic trick) I'd say you're personal experience doesn't match the world. Scientists are the sucker born every minute.
