The interesting thing about your link, besides the story itself, is the written language of the general to the editor of the paper. Although the words are still in use, the tone and the complexity of the sentences demonstrates a writer most at home with the written word. I doubt that even an English teacher today would write in that manner, because we are shaped by the language of television and dumbed-down newspapers. I have noticed that even textbooks for elementary shools today are not as difficult as the ones from my childhood.
