The USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) is a nuclear powered aircraft carrier built by the Newport News Shipbuilding Company of Newport News, Virginia. The keel was laid on August 25, 1986 and the ship was commissioned on July 4, 1992. Two nuclear reactors are used for propulsion (the ship is capable of steaming more than one million miles before refueling) turning 4 five bladed screws that weigh 66,220 pounds each. The GW can travel at speeds over thirty knots and is 1,094 feet long, 257 feet wide and has a height equal to a twenty-four story building (244 feet). The ship can accommodate approximately 80 aircraft and has a flight deck 4.5 acres in size, using four elevators that are 3,880 square feet each to move planes between the flight deck and the hangar bay. With a combat load, the GW displaces almost 97,000 tons and carries over 6,000 crew members. It can distill 400,000 gallons of water and serves 18,000 meals per day. There are over 2,500 compartments on board requiring 2,520 tons of air conditioning capacity (enough to cool over 2,000 homes). The ship uses two anchors that weigh 30 tons each, with each link of the anchor chain weighing 360 pounds.
Here are a few of the statistics that reflect the amount of time and effort that go into running the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73).
In an average year:
Medical sees 10,822 sick call patients, does 256 flight physicals, completes 1,599 physical exams, performs 103 surgeries, processes 3,097 x-rays, does 38,276 lab procedures, fills 16,811 prescriptions, and gives 11,385 immunizations.
In an average month:
Dental sees 500 patients requiring 200 exams, 150 cleanings, 53 tooth extractions, 10 crowns, and 75 fillings.
Disbursing processes 250 travel claims, maintains eight ATM's with a monthly average withdrawal of $320,500, and handles a payroll of $2,276,000 every two weeks.
In an average month:
Combat Systems Department processes more than 400,000 e-mail messages (2.4 million during a six month deployment) and operates over 1400 computers on 19 Local Area Networks.

IT'S definitely no fun to be building Martha Stewart's mansion while the embattled domestic diva suffers the worst crisis of her career.
Stewart bought a $15 million, 153-acre Kanticoe Corners estate in upstate Bedford two years ago, and has been building a huge new house there to the dismay of neighbors, who include Richard Gere, Christopher Reeve, Glenn Close, Ralph Lauren and George Soros.
"Work has slowed down almost to a standstill and she's cut everyone's pay," says our construction site snitch, noting that as the ImClone scandal spreads and Stewart's stock has tumbled, "Everyone's afraid to even look at her."
Work at the site has never been a picnic. Stewart fired her original contractors after eight months because they refused to provide her with an exact accounting of their profits, says our source. And Stewart pays some of the lowliest manual laborers to spy for her and report if someone's late or slacking off.
"They literally have a stopwatch. If you're even three minutes late coming back from lunch, her manager gives you a warning and says you'll be let go next time," fumes our snitch.
With all the stress Stewart has been under because of the ImClone probe, "It's gotten to the point where everyone is so damn afraid of her and of losing their jobs, they hesitate to even make eye contact, and even her managers tiptoe around her," the source says.
Not that Stewart notices: "She just ignores you completely if you so much as say 'Good morning' or 'Hello,' " we're told. The only time she speaks is to issue orders and proclamations, and then, says our insider, "It's like Queen Elizabeth has spoken. The stress level is awful. The treatment is ridiculous and absurd."
Now I'm all for spending one's money however one wishes, but could someone explain why this woman has so many houses? She even has two in the Hamptons alone. Does she really live in them, or does she just decorate them to use in her magazine?
IS an aide to former horndog-in-chief Bill Clinton squiring supermodel Naomi Campbell so that his boss can be near her? A friend of Doug Band has been circulating the story that the "lawyer" and "close adviser" of Clinton is dating the dusky diva.
But Band, who is merely Clintons personal assistant, has apparently been a conduit to Clintons women in the past. And the London Daily Mail and others reported last month that Clinton and Campbell, whod been introduced at an AIDS fund-raiser in Austria in December, had an "intimate" lunch in the Alps and then "hooked up" again in London in March.
"Doug took Monica Lewinsky to the 1995 Congressional Ball," notes our Capitol Hill spy. "That was around the time Monica and the president were having their fling."
A rep for Campbell insists, "Naomi is seeing Doug socially but not often . . . and she is absolutely not having a relationship with Bill Clinton." A rep for Band and Clinton did not return calls.
I received a press release yesterday from my state's GOP which said that 10,000+ more Republicans voted in our May primary than in the 2000 May primary, so it seems to be a trend. That's a lot in a state with so few Pubbies and only 1.8 million in total population!
