Dear Mr. Robinson,
I have been a loyal member of the Free Republic since before the 2000 election. I have been a Conservative since the early days of Clinton. When I found this site, I thought "Thank God, people who think like me." I have continued to think this until the more recent days. Now, it seems that there are threads left and right bashing our President.
Why? There are things the President has done which I don't agree with but my loyality still lies with him. I am not sure if these "Bush-Bashers" fail to see the reality that with politics comes comprimise or it is something worse. I feel there is a cancer in the Free Republic. Some are eating their own.
I feel that some of these people are members of the dreaded democratic underground disguised as disgruntled conservatives. They are only here to stir up trouble. What's worse, they are doing just that. I am not sure what I think you should do.
As a conservative, I believe in our moral code but I also realize the reality of politics. I back our President but if he were doing something unsavory (like lying under oath,) I could not support him. This is unlike the left's clintonista dogma. What President Bush is doing is not betraying the conservative cause. He is using politics to confound the left. Those who do not understand this are either leftists themself or unable to separate themselves from their zealousness.
This is your show. You choose who gets to be a member and who does not. Those who break your rules are banished from the kingdom. I am not discouraging free speech, but this is free speech in your forum. These Bush-Bashers are brining us down. When this infighting happened in 1992, Bill Clinton got elected. let's not let that happen again.
Yours,
Big Guy and Rusty 99

I think we should ban people who want to ban people for not supporting their politician of choice.
I sent my money to the Bush Recount Fund, I wrote a thousand emails to everyone under the sun in support of Bush. I stood firm with Bush over the Global Warming report and sure enough he came out against his own administrations report. I am grateful that his Justice Dept. has decided to support the individual right to bear arms before the Supreme Court. I WILL vote for Bush again.
But I am opposed to those advocating that we have our own version of political correctness established here. The only people who need to be protected from opposing views are those whose own views are too weak to stand on their own merits. That is the tactic of our opponents in Berkeley. They need it. We don't.
Similarly, I am a great fan of Justice Scalia. I think he is the greatest Justice of our time. But I am utterly opposed to his views on private property seizure. My opposition to this one aspect of his philosophy does not make me a 'Scalia-basher' and other Scalia fanatics should not shout heresy and seek to have me banned.
All of this "Bush-basher" talk reminds me of "Clinton-hater". You could present all sorts of evidence about Clinton and yet our opponents squelched all that evidence by merely shouting "Clinton-hater!". No rational discussion was possible. We should not emulate this behavior by shrieking "Bush-basher" rather than debating the merits.

Bush-Bashers do not wait for the facts Well, the steel tariffs and pork-packed farm bill are facts, and neither is the principled action of a professed free-trader.
Sure, as Jim R. says, the bashers will still pull the lever for Bush/Giuliani(?) in 2004, but it's unsettling to see the ease and speed with which the President reversed himself on something so fundamental as tariffs.
His old man had a wobbly gene. Let's hope it hasn't been inherited.

I totally agree. Furthermore, we should also ban anyone who expresses an opinion different from yours, because such "dissent" might tear us apart and "bring us down". CRITICISM OF OUR LORD GOD GEORGE W. BUSH WILL NOT BE TOLERATED, AND ANY SUCH CRITICISM COULD ONLY BE SUBVERSION BY THE DEMOCRATIC UNDERGROUND. AMEN.

I honestly havent seen any GW bashing per se... Please see my post #54. If what I am talking about there isn't bashing, what is?

Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America... Hey, wait a minute! You had to have altered that quote. You must have taken out the part about mandatory Bush and Republican Party cheerleading. I'm sure that has to be in there somewhere.

Dan, Bush flew jets. I don't particularly like the Air Force since my friend was in it but my brother who served for 5 years on the Ike assures me that though some might be asses they most assuredly have big ones.

You need to seriously re-examine your standards for what is and isn't conservatism. I also voted for Bush and fought too hard against Gore supporters and their liberal thug agenda to have it imposed by the guy I supported in his place. So far, the Gore agenda seems to have flourished under George W. Bush, and that son of a bitch didn't even get elected. Since you wish all Bush critics silenced, I'm sure you just loved it when Bush signed the death warrant for free political speech by endorsing that filthy pile of communistic crap known as "Campaign Finance Reform". I guess Gore did win after all.

I am not discouraging free speech, but this is free speech in your forum. You're sounding just like the socialists who, when they try to use the power of the state to censor someone, always preface it with, "This is NOT a First Amendment issue!" You ARE seeking to discourage free speech. If you succeed, FR will fold in a fortnight.
(But I'm just a disruptor from DU, so you can disregard what I said.)

At times, this does ring true.

"They seem to be on their own wavelength. His father learned nothing from RWR and W is plainly obviously undeniably a man with no plan, no center, no honor and less common sense."While I question some of his policy changes I don't question his honor. Look at Bill Clinton if you want to see lack of honor.
