I was never picky with my boys either...if their rooms were a mess, I just closed the door...I did not want the hassle...
My older boy was pretty good about keeping his room fairly decent...but the younger boy was a disaster...there were actual mountains and hills of things in his room...but the odd thing is, if I complained about it, and wondered how he could find anything, he would tell me to ask him to find something, and he could find anything in a snap...so I just left it...
After the older boy died, and we moved into a smaller place, Andys room was still always a disaster...hills, and mountains of various items, planted all over his room...
So one day, while he was off at at school, I spent the whole day, cleaing and rearranging his whole room, and got it nice and clean and neat...
I thought he would be happy...But when he came home from school, I thought he was going to have a fit...seems having the room all neat and tidy, just bugged him, and he was just beside himself...he was only 12 at the time, but he asked me to never do that again...he preferred to live amongst all the clutter in his room...That was the last time I ever cleaned his room
And it took him just a few days to get the hillss and mountains back to where they were, before I so rudely cleaned up
Yet today, he lives up in Seattle, (he has two rooms to himself in a house that he shares with the woman who owns the house, his rent helping her pay her mortgage), and his two rooms are actually pretty neat for him...
But he claims his mind works better, if he has his little piles here and there, and has his stuff arranged in those piles...its just the way he operates...
