Yes, edited records (either decades ago, or months ago - when were they tampered with?) seemed like a possibility to me, and edited identity now. He seems disjointed, uncommitted to anything - perfect candidate to be a lone wolf nutcase or a pawn in someone else's chess game, but not a candidate to be a high officer.

Was he deliberately planted by the military (or ??) to get that job. Why would he work there so often without pay, and then be put on the payroll as a consultant for a mere $200 a week when he was supposedly working as hard digging up leads and details as any reporter at Fox? It's all very fishy.
What was his real source of income? He certainly couldn't have military retirement with that record, so how could he saunter onto bases regularly? IDs are required - base security is especially strict after 9-11.

Usually big blanks in someones military records indicate that they were on covert assignments. If all his records had been blanked out for security reasons, it is possible that a computer system truncated them and moved his discharge date back to match the date of the last entry.

He may be a legitimate Special Forces type spook. It sounds to me like he is still on assignment.
