President Bush's ax-wielding Earth Day outing in the Adirondacks did nothing to improve Robert Redford's opinion of the chief executive's environmental policy.

"They can't get away with George doing a photo op [clearing brush]," Redford told us at Tuesday's celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Sundance Film Festival. "It's a little late for that.

"You have to be worried when you consider what's behind [Bush's] policies, because it serves such a narrow interest," Redford went on. The Sundance event at Cipriani 42nd St. drew Glenn Close, Sally Field and her son, Eli Craig, Lisa Kudrow, Stanley Tucci, John Turturro, Hume Cronyn, Chad Lowe and Hilary Swank. The former Orioles fan tells The News' Ken Bazinet that she will remain true to the Yankees, "the greatest baseball team in the world" …

ANDREW Cuomo was steamed Monday night at the RiverKeeper fund-raiser at Chelsea Piers when Carl McCall, his rival in the Democratic primary for governor, drew just as much praise as he did from the group's executive director, Alex Matthiessen (son of author Peter Matthiessen). The group was founded by Robert Kennedy Jr., Cuomo's brother-in-law. "Andrew Cuomo was hopping mad," said one witness. And the night before, when RFK Jr. hosted a fund-raiser for Cuomo. "he couldn't think of anything bad to say about McCall, or Pataki." Kennedy, in his efforts to clean up the Hudson, has gotten along better with the Republican governor than with any of his Democratic predecessors.

"Designing Women" news:

THE BEAUTY Delta Burke looked anything but depressed as she sparkled recently on "The View." She discussed her lifelong bouts with depression and the medication and therapy that has changed her life. Delta spoke of her renewed friendship with Dixie Carter. They had fallen out during Delta's final fraught season on "Designing Women." A few weeks ago they were paired in Dixie's legal drama series "Family Law" and, as usual, were terrific together.

So, now that these Southern belles are as they once were, it's time for Linda Bloodworth Thomason to bring back all the designing women for a TV reunion. (I have personally been revisiting them on late-night reruns, and this show is even better than I remembered.) Dixie, Delta, Annie Potts and Jean Smart never quite recaptured the magic of their "DW" years in subsequent endeavors. I guess the characters Julia and Suzanne Sugarbaker, Mary Jo and Charlene were simply the roles of a lifetime in a juxtaposition that was almost divine. So bring 'em back, if only for an hour-long special. Everybody else is doing it! Liz Smith

Good morning to ya. The Bush photo is fine - it just reminded me of a tragic OlanMills moment suffered by ten of Mrs. lodwick's family and moi. I wanted to bop the OlanMill's twit thirty minutes into the shoot, and then after seeing the results a few weeks later, I wanted to shoot him.
