An interesting point discussed in that article was the question of why the Indians didn't have ANY unknown diseases to give back to the Europeans.

Part of that was a lower initial population density, diseases would burn out (run out of unexposed hosts) and not be able to carry on to future generations. Also only a small sample of the total number of diseases made it across the Bering Straight. Europe, on the other hand imported diseases from Asia and Africa with trade in silk, ivory, wild animals, and slaves...
