The claim is misleading, I think. This is an atomic level recording medium. The light doesn't really stand still (photon wise) it is just recorded then played back later, creating a new photon.

If we can stop the laser does that mean that light sabers are theoretically possible? My understanding was that having the laser beam go to a certain point and then stop was the problem.
Please don't laugh to hard at this stupid question, my minor was in archaeology not physics.
