Installed the first candidate for a chat program.

Out of the box this is ugly! But it is open source, and I can fix the ugliness.

The name of this product is NFC Chat, written by Lyrisoft Solutions, Inc. Source, etc available here

It supports chat rooms.

When you first sign in, it takes you to a list of rooms. Click a room to enter chat mode.

How can someone watch without logging in and entering the room, where the other people in the room can see you are there, even if you're very very quiet?

I don't know, but I was going to try! Pretty funny, all those people logged in, and nobody talking. I love this thread - gave me a lot of laughs!

Is IRC restricted to nine-character handles? I know that is how the big IRC networks are setup, is it a protocol limitation or their policy? And can it authenticate against a database?

The thing about this Java-based chat, while out of the box it doesn't do authentication against my database, it can be programmed to do so. And, the applet should be able to read my cookie, completely bypassing the need to log in. Oh, and it does support long screen names (I'm sure with a little hammering it can be forced to take spaces in the names too.)

But... what I really want is voice capability. IRC doesn't do that, and neither does NFC Chat-- so, I'll ditch it as soon as I find one that does.

The problem with logging into the chat room when there is no one there is the first person has to creat a chat room. So instead of clicking on the "join" button, click on the "creat" button at the bottom. Proceed from there.

Just tried Beta Chat with a Mac running MacOS 9.1 and it seemed to run fine...set up a room, talked to myself a while, and left.

Bummer, chat client doesn't work behind my companies firewall. Not your problem though, I can't use any chat programs. Could be the port number 7777. I was using it from home yesterday and it worked pretty well.

Sorry, I JUST saw this reply. I don't like my 'comments and reply' page. Seems like there should be a different color for recent replies, and they just seem jumbled to me. Did you ever get into the chat-room?
