You're right, although didn't Shackleton take ponies on his failed first trip to the South Pole? Isn't that where he learned they didn't work? I could be wrong---after a while, the expeditions tend to get blurred. Scott, as I recall, also took some early snowmobiles that failed.

Hope tomorrow night moves faster than tonight's show. Agreed. The Imax movie that we saw on Saturday was riveting. We walked out wanting to see it again. We probably will choose O'Rielly over part 2 of the A&E version...

Good monday morning, rohry. I taped the film las evening. Nova a few weeks ago had a fascinating two hour account of Shackleton's voyage. It's an absolutely amazing story of the power of leadership in the face of the direst situtions and impossible odds. Shackleton's astounding voyage surpasses even the fabled journeys of Jason and Odysseus. It should be included in leadership studies at all levels.

I understand that NE Patriots coach Bill Belechak used the film and frequent alusions to Ernest Shackelton to hold his team together during the difficult days of their ultimately triumphant season.

I just watched the bio before the "Shackleton" show, and I was right, he DID use Manchurian ponies on his failed S. Pole attempt in 1903? 1906?

You may be right. The Imax movie was fairly short (70 min.) and did not cover any of his earlier expeditions, just the 1914-1916 one.

I saw on another thread that your search function was broken. Saw this movie over the weekend that you might be interested in. Here is a re-bump...

Yeah, I was thinking of Scott, although Shackleton did continue when he was warned the ice was worse than ever. However, once the ship sank, he proved to be a remarkable leader, and getting all 27 guys back was an unbelievable feat.
Scott was the one who had "snowmobiles" that broke, horses that died, didn't have enough food stashed, then had the really bad luck of getting caught in a blizzard not too far from a food cache.
