The Lorien Elves are much more serious and ethereal (and the Haldir in the film is just spooky!) than the singing, laughing Rivendell bunch. (Here's where I launch into "well, when I lived with the elves...")

Really? I prefer the Rivendell Elves because they seem more like High Elves. The Lorien ones are too Silvan for my tastes.

I agree with you... These elves act like the Mirkwood elves in the Hobbit. They are very much captors rather than companions on their way into the wood. They are a bit scary but wonderful, would shoot you if you tried to flee. One never would have thought to flee the Rivendell elves, or the wandering party we met in the Shire.

Maybe that reflects the Noldorin influence (Lorien) versus the Sindarin influence (Rivendell). The Noldor made the Silmarils and went to war with Morgoth to recover them; the Sindar "missed the boat" for Valinor because they were goofing off too much on the trip to the coast. ;)
