Ok...I have a question. Why didn't the Ents know about Hobbits?Here's a wild guess.....Maybe knowing their importance, Iluvatar removed them from the Ent's memory.

Why didn't the Ents know about Hobbits? Because the Hobbits never left the Shire much, so few folk knew about them.... And trees rarely travel, so I don't think the ents knew a lot that they couldn't overhear from folk wandering through the forest!

That is a good question. Perhaps it's one that Tolkein didn't think of, nor have the answer for. I've perused "The Letters of JRRT" for mention of Ent and Hobbit, yet to find any with the two together in reference to your question. Ents learned their language from the Elves first, then the men. That's what I know so far.

I do remember Gandalf making the remark in his first scenes with Frodo (can't recall what the book said about it) that the world goes on, largely unaware of Hobbits and their life in the Shire, for which he was very grateful. But you raise a good point.
