Here is Return of the Hunters by Pieter Breughel the Elder, painted in 1565.

I hope you guys don't mind me posting this stuff. This guy's paintings really remind me of the film, FOTR. There's no doubt that Alan Lee and John Howe are aware of Breughel's work, though whether or not they were consciously influenced by him is another question.

But I think the paintings give a fascinating look into life during the middle ages and are amazingly reminiscent of how (at least) I imagine Middle Earth and the Shire to have been.

This guy's paintings really remind me of the film, FOTR.

Interesting too that the hunters have bows and spears, but no guns, which were still more than a little unwieldy, not to mention expensive.

It also looks like the style of one of my favorite artists, Will Moses. I think he is the great grandson of Grandma Moses. I just love this style of art. I'm going to have to keep a lookout for more Brueghel!
