how can a movie be based on a book if the screenwriter doesn't read it?

Oh, did you catch any of the background on the awful movie made from Starship Troopers? The director (Dutch, but I can't recall his name offhand) declared pride in the fact that he had not read the book, saying he didn't want it to taint his interpretation. I'm not kidding, unfortunately. It makes no sense to me either, but it does explain that mess of a movie.

I take pride in not having watched the disgraceful Starship Troopers movie. I mean, they really destroyed it, so I understand. I love the book, too.
