Aragorn spent time in Minas Tirith under the name of 'Thorongil', back when Denethor's father Ecthelion II was Steward. Apparently the people of Minas Tirith really liked him, much more than they liked Denethor, and if Aragorn has wanted to reveal himself then, they would probably have made him king right away. It wasn't time yet, though, so after Ecthelion died, Aragorn just left. Denethor resented Aragorn, though he didn't know who he truly was. It's sort of implied that he recognize Aragorn (with the palantir, maybe) and that's part of the reason why he was angry about Gandalf showing up when he did.

Does that help?

What you need is a Krispy Kreme! We're getting a shop here in Tulsa pretty soon!

Yeah... I didn't know the background... so, since I'm a detail freak, any detail I learn just builds on the story. That helps explain some of Denethor's anger at Gandalf.

I'm not a big fan of Krispy Kreme because they glaze everything. I usually go to the local bakery and buy one of every kind... (except jelly... what a horrible thing to do to a donut)

I agree about the donuts... jelly donuts are evil! Now, a nice toasted coconut, or chocolate glazed....mmm, yum. But I had an omelet for breakfast, so I'm nice and full.

Denethor preferred Saruman to Gandalf in the first place. If memory serves, Ecthelion II, Gandalf and Thorongil were all very chummy and at that time Denethor suspected Gandalf was trying to put Thorongil ahead of him in the Steward sucession. BTW this stuff is in Appendix A under Stewards of Gondor.

I know what I'm going to be reading that as soon as I finish ROTK. Thanks for giving me the details.

Now if I could just slog through the Silmillarion (forgive spelling) Too bad the son isn't the writer the father is.

I have a hard time keeping awake reading Silmarillion and use it more as a reference book than anything else. :)

Maybe as a writing exercise I'll try rewriting some Silmarillion stories just to see if I can put some life into them. :D

If you do... can you give the book a new title. That's one of those words I'll never learn how to spell or say.

You two do know that you're making me very angry, criticizing one of the greatest works of literature ever written, don't you?

Just kidding. I know a lot of people don't like Silmarillion, but I think it was Tolkien's masterwork. Just so moving and beautiful and Elvish!

Anyway, I think Elf Gems would be a better title for a book about Denethor and his sons. Or maybe that should be Eagle Gems?

I was wondering when you would show up. :)

My problem with Silmarillion is that it's so...dry. I never know any of the characters (and there are a lot of characters) well enough to really care about any of them. It reads like a history textbook.

Argumentative bunch of hobbits in here this morning! I have to go feed the ponies now!

Jen, I have prepared the template for the Chapter 7 post tomorrow, and will upload it to the Hidey Hole right now for you to work on - remember you are pinging and posting in my absence tomorrow!

BTW-who is it that Aragorn meets in the middle of the Battle of the Pelannor Fields, when they both lean on their swords and have a short conversation while the conflict rages around them? Is it Eomyr, Faramir, or someone else? I really like that little interlude. I hope they put it in the film.
