"one of my FAVORITE pieces of music!!"
Mine also, I've always kind of thought it went with the Lord of the Rings.

Even Tolkien said they were stagnant:
Letter 181 Mere change as such is not represented as 'evil': it is the unfolding of the story and to refuse this is of course against the design of God. But the Elvish weakness is in these terms naturally to regret the past, and to become unwilling to face change: as if a man were to hate a very long book still going on, and wished to settle down in a favourite chapter. Hence they fell in a measure to Sauron's deceits: they desired some 'power' over things as they are (which is quite distinct from art), to make their particular will to preservation effective: to arrest change, and keep things always fresh and fair

Did you get my email? Whataya think?
To: Overtaxed
Which is indeed, natural, and almost harmless compared to the humans who started to fear and desperately avoid death! Whose little obsession has been more costly?

Worried in what way about Gondor and Rohan?
What more is he supposed to say for them?
and how exactly is he more worried about Rivendell than anyone else? All his dialogue is about Rivendell. All his talk is about what would happen if Rivendell fell. Wouldn't it be worse for ME as a whole if Gondor and Rohan fell? "Rivendell cannot withstand both Mordor and Isengard." Well what makes him think that Gondor and Rohan can? They're on the front lines already fighting the battle while he's in the rear whining about what will happen to Rivendell when all the Elves are leaving it anyway.
He ought to be more worried about Gondor and Rohan. If the Enemy is stopped there then his precious Rivendell would be safe.

I got it but haven't played it yet. Kitty left the room when I played "Jingle Bells" a few minutes ago! Everyone's a music critic!

Sounds to me like Tolkien is almost describing the elves as good conservative purists. Maybe you are on the wrong end of this argument!
or perhaps on the wrong board...Ducking!
To: JenB
What? We're running a competition? All I'm saying is that the Elves are just as weak (although in a different area) as Men. Both were acting contrary to the will of God.
To: HairOfTheDog
So the ring could not "stay" there. Another option needed to be found! It's not the logic that I have the problem with...it's the attitude!
To: Overtaxed
The discussion was not about an attack on Rohan or Gondor, but on Rivendell. The RING was in Rivendell... Saruman was preparing an army to come for the RING...
To: Overtaxed
Hmm, well, if Elves are immortal and Men live, usually, less than a hundred years, then how many cut-short human lives match up to a single murdered Elf? Especially since Men have a nice mysterious-but-generally-good afterlife, whereas the Elves are "bound up in this world". They may get reincarnated but nobody knows what happens to Elves when the world ends. (After Dagor Dagorlad, that is, since they obviously get to fight then, them and all the noble humans, against a returned Morgoth and his hordes of evil.)

Both were acting contrary to the will of GodReally now? - HOW? Evidence needed again still!
To: JenB
You are giving in to easily to the premise... the whole premise is faulty.
To: HairOfTheDog
Sounds to me like Tolkien is almost describing the elves as good conservative purists. LOL depends on what the meaning of "good conservative purists" is. I wasn't aware that conservatives were against all change!
Here! [tossing a chicken bone] Have a wing!
To: HairOfTheDog
Heaven forbid that Rivendell be attacked...it's okay if everyone else is!
To: Overtaxed
Exactly! Who cares about Men, they're born to die. Elves, on the other hand, are actually cool.

Thanks for the wing! May I share with you an example of a fine and admirable elf?
To: Overtaxed
It would make little difference if the others stood or fell if the Ring was captured in Rivendell. Rivendell was the one under threat from Saruman...
This is a Straw-man argument. Gondor and Rohan had not been declined assistance.

From
The Letters of JRR Tolkien Letter #181. Are you going to tell me Tolkien didn't know what he's talking about in his own works?
To: HairOfTheDog
Too pretty-boy!
