The New Hobbit Hole

Posted on 03/14/2002 5:07:26 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The New Hobbit Hole

Concerning Hobbits

The New Hobbit Chronicles

This is a continuation of the infamous thread New Zealander Builds Hobbit Hole originally posted on January 26, 2001 by John Farson, who at the time undoubtedly thought he had found a rather obscure article that would elicit a few replies and die out. Without knowing it, he became the founder of the Hobbit Hole. For reasons incomprehensible to some, the thread grew to over 4100 replies. It became the place for hobbits and friends of hobbits to chit chat and share LoTR news and views, hang out, and talk amongst ourselves in the comfort of familiar surroundings.

In keeping with the new posting guidelines, the thread idea is continuing here, as will the Green Dragon Inn, our more structured spin-off thread, as soon as we figure out how to move all the good discussion that has been had there. As for the Hobbit Hole, we will just start fresh, bringing only a few mathoms such as the picture above with us to make it feel like home, and perhaps a walk down memory lane:

Our discussion has been light:

It very well may be that a thread named "New Zealander builds Hobbit hole" will end up being the longest Tolkien thread of them all, with some of the best heartfelt content... Sorry John, but I would have rather it had been one with a more distinguished title!… post 252 - HairOfTheDog

However, I can still celebrate, with quiet dignity, the fact that what started as a laugh about some wacko in New Zealand has mutated and grown into a multifaceted discussion of the art, literature, and philosophy that is Tolkien. And now that I've managed to write the most pompous sentence of my entire life, I agree, Rosie… post 506 - JenB

Hah! I was number 1000!! (Elvish victory dance... wait, no; that would be too flitty) … post 1001 - BibChr

Real men don't have to be afraid of being flitty! Go for it. – post 1011 – HairOfTheDog

Seventeen years to research one mystical object seems a bit excessive… post 1007 - JenB

Okay...who's the wise guy who didn't renew Gandalf's research grant?… post 1024 – Overtaxed

To the very philosophical:

…Judas Iscariot obviously was a good man, or he wouldn't have been chosen to be one of the Apostles. He loved Jesus, like all of the Apostles, but he betrayed him. Yet without his betrayal, the Passion and Crucifixion would never have occurred, and mankind would not have been redeemed. So without his self-destruction infinite good would not have been accomplished. I certainly do not mean this to be irreverant but it seems to me that this describes the character of Gollum, in the scenes so movingly portrayed above… Lucius Cornelius Sulla

To fun but heartfelt debates about the integrity and worth of some of the characters…

…Anyone else notice how Boromir treats the hobbits? He's very fond of them but he seems to think of them as children - ruffling Frodo's hair, calls them all 'little ones'. He likes them, but I don't think he really respects them… post 1536 - JenB

Yes... Tolkien told us not to trust Boromir right off the bat when he began to laugh at Bilbo, until he realized that the Council obviously held this hobbit in high esteem. What a pompous dolt… post 1538 - HairOfTheDog

…I think almost every fault of his can be traced directly back to his blindness to anything spiritual or unseen. He considers the halflings as children, because that is what they look like. He considers the only hope of the ring to be in taking it and using it for a victory in the physical realm. He cannot see what the hobbits are truly made of, he cannot see the unseen hope of what the destruction of the ring might mean--the destruction of Sauron himself, and he cannot see the unseen danger that lies in the use of the ring itself… I just feel sorry for Boromir--he is like a blind but honorable man, trying to take the right path on the road but missing the right path entirely because he simply cannot see it… post 1548 - Penny1

Boromir isn't a jerk, he's a jock… post 2401 – Overtaxed

-----------------------------------------

Oh, I think by the time Frodo reaches the Cracks, he's not even himself anymore! I think he's not only on the brink of a dangerous place physically, he's on the brink of losing himself completely during the exchange with Gollum. But for some reason, the take-over isn't complete till he actually has to throw the Ring in. The person speaking to Gollum is not Frodo, but the "Wheel of Fire" that Sam sees. After the Ring is destroyed, Frodo not only comes back to himself, but comes back with the unbearable (to him) knowledge of what it's like to be completely without compassion. I think that's why it's so important to him to be compassionate in the Shire… post 2506 - 2Jedismom

…Regarding Frodo's compassion... it's a little too much at the end. Even Merry tells him that he's going to have to quit being so darn nice. But you're right. He's learned a lesson about evil that very few ever learn since it wasn't an external lesson but an internal one. (Those kinds of lessons have the greatest impact) Not only did he totally succumb to it, but he was rather ruthless to my little Smeagol… post 2516 - carton253

Well that Frodo was a big mean bully! (to Smeagol)… post 2519 – Overtaxed

So as you can see, everything JRR Tolkien (and Peter Jackson) is welcome here in our New Row, our soon-to-be familiar New Hobbit Hole…; philosophy, opinion, good talk and frequent silliness.

The professor was great.... In fact, we talked about 6 minutes. (He's really all right... and has calmed down his insults on Republicans and "W") I told him I would refrain from singing Happy Days are Here Again, and he said he would appreciate it.

We got our mid terms back. Before he passed them out he said that the class did not do well. The average was a 70.. which would play out to a C+. I thought, I worked too hard and studied too long to get a C+, so I was very disappointed. Until I got my test back... 95! "A"... either the highest or the 2nd highest grade in the class. (Smeagol takes a bow).

In our talk, I told the professor that I loved politics. He said that he could tell, and I was quite good at it. Then I had to defend Benjamin Netanyahu because he doesn't like Bibi. Well... Besides Reagan and "W", I love Bibi the best. He listened to me while I said Bibi was good for Israel. He thinks the Palis are victims... which I don't. Now he's thinking... I'm a conservative, a republican, and a zionist... I am this man's walking nightmare! :)

The class is boring as all get out (lecture only), but the liberal is turning into one of my favorite professors. I would take a class he was teaching again.

Morning to you Master Dwarf!

First things first - STRONG COFFEE! My infant was not feeling well at all yesterday and that continued into the night. I was up 3 times with her and finally she passed out cold at around 3:45AM this morning! So, needless to say, I am dragging.

I've put out some juices as well for the caffeine-averse among us. I've baked up some hambuger bun size buttermilk biscuits for breakfast sandwiches this morning. Plenty of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, cheese and mushrooms to stuff them with too! :)

The hot sauce, salt, pepper, mustard, ketchup and mayo is over on the sideboard, along with a couple of platters of french toast & flapjacks. The syrups are to the right there.

Today is Friday - let the feeding begin! ENJOY!

Oh, and Corin, I hope to get to your book today after I tackle the Mount Doom of paperwork on my desk. My prayers are with your family as always.

We'll hold down the fort and the Precious until you get back.

Hey, I'm still here until this afternoon. Hospice is setting him up at home today.

Look what they've posted over at DU...

Due to the unexpectedly high traffic to our website since election day, we are going to limit access to our message board. Only individuals who have donated to Democratic Underground during the last year will be given access. This is a temporary change which will only be in effect until our traffic returns to its pre-election levels, hopefully very soon.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

It must be a pattern. I also can't get to mysmilies.com...anybody else have that trouble?

CONGRATULATIONS on your "A", carton! Woo-hooo!

I bet the professor cannot stand the fact that you are way smarter than all of his liberal prodigies in that classroom. Tee-hee!

It seems, however, that he cannot help but admire you and enjoys the mental wrestling match against someone with a brain, albeit with different views from his own. Careful carton, you may just lead him into the vast right wing before long.

Good for you! - I am glad you are coming to terms with your professor! It will make the class much more pleasant if you can come to friendly discussion.

He thinks the Palis are victims... which I don't.

They may have been victims once, but their cause ceased to matter in my book on the day of the first suicide bomber. In my world, you cannot be a barbarian one day, and sit down at a table and negotiate with the civilized world the next day with people who are bound by rules. You lose your license. I think we have already given them too much legitimacy, and it will never end.

I like the way you think... Read Benjamin Netanyahu's book "A Durable Peace"... it is very good and eye-opening.

"I can't wait to find out who these people are, and what the pieces of stone will do when they are put together."

I agree, I want to find out what happens (in all the stories). All these stories seem lots better than most of the stuff for sale in book stores.

I am so relieved you agree, because you clearly know more about the whole situation than I do. Mine is a fairly gut level reaction from pretty casual observation. Men wearing suits negotiating with people the likes of Arafat is exactly the same as paying ransom to kidnappers. They don't deserve the legitimacy, and I wish we would untie Isreal's hands. Course we would then have to protect them after they kick the Pali's butts, but that would be more satisfying than this current state of affairs.

"You should show up next week in an NRA sweatshirt..."

I did something like that to my very liberal figure drawing professor, whom I like.

We have to turn in a self portrait every week, so about a month ago, I handed her one showing me winking, holding a shotgun, with thumb up, and wearing a T-shirt that says "I'M THE NRA."

I supposed that would really pi$$ her off, but no, she loved it, put it in a glass case, it's been on public display in the art building of the community college for a month now.

She told me it made a "political statement," which is something she always wants. I had been trying to figure out how to make a drawing that shows how much liberals make me mad :-)

Everytime Israel sits down with Arafat, they reward terror. Why should Arafat quit terror attacks? Look what it has gotten him. In 1993, he was languishing in Tunisia, forgotten and impotent. Israel makes him a partner in the peace process. (Stupid move!) In return, he gets to be head of the PA, gets the West Bank, an armed police force, billions of dollars of aids from US, UN, EU, and Israel.

The Palestinian Authority has two means/goals of fighting, hence the division in the terror groups. Hamas, Islamic Jihad believe that Palestine is for the Palestinians and the Jews must be driven into the sea. Therefore, they will not negotiate at all. When it looks like "peace" might be at hand, they ratchet up the terror.

Arafat believes in incrementalism. Get the West Bank. Get Gaza. Use these territories as bases for further pushes into Israel proper. It's all deception.

Netanyahu says that Arafat is Bin Ladin with good PR. I believe that.

I don't want to clutter up the Hobbit Hole with my views on this subject, but Israel is in danger.

Arafat has broken every promise made at the Oslo Accords, the Hebron Accords, Wye River Accords. When you listen to him in Arabic, he has always said that he has no intention of keeping his word, but uses these accords to strengthen his position and power for the destruction of Israel.

The Palestinian people (and I lived on the West Bank so I do know them) are the pawns. But they are pawns of choice. They go along with their leaders because they believe that in the end, they will win and gather to themselves the spoils of Israel.

I don't know about a self-portrait, but since the election I have had an image in my head of top Democrats as puppeteers, their constituency as the puppets and Dubya holding a big set of shears clipping away the strings to set the people free.

The top Dems I picture are Bill and Hillary, Daschle and Jesse Jackson.
