Last time I went job hunting during the fourth quarter it seemed like everyone was putting off hiring until the new year. I was thinking about circulating my resume after New Year's (Seamus, please advise if this is the wrong thing to do.)

It's tough to say. A good percentage of companies will put off Q4 hiring due to budgetary constraints, which they hope will change come Q1. However, there are also a lot of businesses whos fiscal years will end in July/August or September/October. In those cases, they'll be more than likely to hire when their fiscal new year begins.

December is a bad month to job hunt in almost every case anyway, unless the company has a dire need. Vacations and holidays come up, and people just simply aren't as productive. You'll also run into difficulties in the early parts of January, as a lot of other people will also be putting off submitting their resume until after the new year...then it becomes a question of how well you can stand out above the rest. Persistance pays off in this case.

From what I've experienced, there really is no "good" time to interview, as all companies are different. But, typically, Early/mid Fall, and early Spring are where you see hiring trends improve.

Ps...here's a tasty bit of advice that I've picked up along the years. Never, ever deal with HR if you can avoid it. HR is filled with morons who are just looking to fill open slots. If you can, deal primarily with line/department managers directly...these are the people to call first, and even if they end up directing you to HR, then you've lost nothing. I've found that the best jobs are often not even advertised...that's how I got my current job. I wanted to go back into Tech sales, so I called the Sales Manager of a local web site development start-up and dealed directly with him. The only time I've ever dealt with HR departments is on my first day, for paperwork only.

I hope that helps answer your question, OT.

Your statements makes perfect sense! Our company is having trouble closing deals - everyone we talk to says "Yeah, yeah, we love your product and it's perfect, but we have a budget freeze [this quarter/end of fiscal year/til the accountants say otherwise] and so we aren't getting a lot of actual purchases...

On the other hand, Rosie, it all depends on what field you're in. High-tech, isn't it? I know the market's been lousy but I understand it's getting better - looks like it hit rock bottom and is coming up. And, if you want to move to Pittsburgh, our jobless rate is actually about half a point better than the national average... and we have a lot of high-tech places!

Hehehe....tell me about it. That's pretty much what I thought. I'm aiming for spring since I'd like to finish up what I've started here. I suppose I could always put booklets together for the Evil Empire. :)

Maybe I should start learning.....ick....database stuff. I've seen positions listed around here for "scientists with programming experience" or "programmers with a science background."

Yeah....databases. They usually want someone with Access and/or Oracle and all I've got is a lousy Java. :) Or I could cough up the bucks for PageMaker and be a technical writer.....I might be lousy at starting novels, but from what I've seen, my grammar is better than most when I want it to be, that is.

How goes the writing?

Writing? What writing?

(sigh) I've been running errands since about 10:00 this morning. But, I spent about an hour re-arranging my outline a bit while I was waiting for my car at the fix-it shop. A Palm Pilot is good for that!

The last time I actually purchased Medieval music, I also purchased Bach and some bluegrass. The sales clerk seemed a bit edgy that day for some reason. :)

The clerk MAY have been suffering from congnitive dissonance as a result of your music choices!

Election Predictions
"Saruman the White" (Terry McAuliffe) in his Tower of Orthanc thought himself undefeatable. However, on November 5th 2002 the White Wizard is going down! The "Ents" are getting positively "hasty" and are going to dig up the Ring of Isengard crush the unbreachable Tower of Orthanc. The orcs and even the Nazgul can't save him. He shall be defeated by the Mighty Men of Gondor and the Riders of Rohan (The Horse Lords). The Dark Lord Sauron (Bill Clinton) will be most displeased. Even the Balrog (Hillary Clinton) in the Mines of Moria could not defeat Gandalf's (G.W.B) power. The Fellowship of the Conservatives will prevail against the liberal darkness.

One liberal to rule them all,
One liberal to find them,
One liberal to bring them all,
And in the darkness bind them.

The end!
