I'm back from a long day of costume gathering -- we've got everything we need from doublets, gowns (even got an old silver acetate graduation gown -- at Goodwill, of all places -- to go under my medieval doublet), wigs, ears, great old authentic Spanish sword that looks like it could be enchanted, and elfish shoes for my wife that she's going to paint metallic gold. Along with some black Patagonia ski underwear that I already have, I think we're almost set. All I need to do is find some elvish black shoes (cheap).

Thank you all for your suggestions...tonight I'll be trying them all out and see what I come up with.

My wife (Melanie) is going to be very Galadriel-like (long blond braided wig -- old hippie style -- and we found a great all-white Juliet gown with cape and gold braid belt. Absolutely perfect for Galadriel. But we'll come up with another name -- I'm sure there'll be a half-dozen Galadriel's there. I could be Celeborn -- I have a long platinum blond straight hair wig (woman's!) that sort of looks like Celeborn's hair in the movie.

Now I'm going to try all of your suggestions. I'll be back later to tell you what we decide on.

"a "heartwarming family film". Usually that means "Star Trek""

I thought it meant "Lassie" or something like that. I reckon I prefer Star Trek :-P

Since they're only counting words, I could probably get by copying 50,000 names from the phonebook. :)

We're an odd family... we make really sarcastic comments during films like "Lassie". We prefer Star Trek too. Actually one of our favorites is "Galaxy Quest".

Have I mentioned my father is an elder in the PCA? *gryn*

That's funny, my wife and me are going to one of those things too, given by my fishing club.

Still trying to think what to go as, maybe a giant squid. Jeanne can be an octopus, or something.

I'm going to have to read through the back posts, see the suggestions.

"we make really sarcastic comments during films like "Lassie"."

I think I'm with you on that, only I thought "Lassie" was a weekly sitcom with June Lockhart (and God knows who else). Glad it still doesn't come on, anyway.

Presbyterian Church in America. Penny's one too... haven't seen her much lately though. We're the conservative ones, not the liberal PCUSA.

Karaoke is where they have a sound system that plays the background music for popular songs without the vocal tracks, and drunk people pick a song from a book and get up and sing it on stage in front of the crowd. Some go solo, some drag up all their friends for a singalong. The lyrics play on a monitor in front of you, kindof like "follow the bouncing ball".

Some people are really good, good enough to be in a band... and some are absolutely horrible! I think I fall somewhere in-between, I have a friend who is horrible, but we just don't tell her and she gets up everytime anyway. Its fun!

Here is a bunch of strangers doing Karaoke that I found on google, to help you picture the scene.
