However, I do know a very bad Smeagol who is going to get punished if Smeagol does not watch out!
I am a writer. Not a good one... and what amazes me about the books in the richness of his characters and the courage of his story. Tolkien has managed to create this world, give it flawed characters, remain true to the characters, and really write a fantastic piece of literature.
So, I love to learn because every piece of information I get just blows my mind more and more. He was a genius.
That's why I like Smeagol. Really, Smeagol is the bad guy (for Frodo and Sam). But Tolkien doesn't just make him bad. By, splitting his personality, making him a hoot, giving him some of the best lines in the books, but, yet staying true to the purpose of the character, I find myself enthralled by the depths and richness of a Stoor Hobbit gone bad. Smeagol shimmers... and all the characters do that.
Smeagol shimmers...like a shiny pool of oil, colorful but poisonous, fascinating in its vileness?
I've known a few Kiwis in my day, between the Corps and Rugby...great guys...never could really figure them out though...
Thanks for the story link...it's a perfect example of the Kiwi syndrome...how can a house that blends so well be an eyesore?...For greenies, that's pretty contradictory...
Now...where can I gets me one these FOTR that're floating around? And please nothing too complicated...as far as technology is concerned. I belong in the Third Age...
But, Tolkien didn't leave him vile. He made him funny. And to me, he is funny. Down to his syntax. But, then, Tolkien showed us... like lightening in a dark room... you can see, then you can't... just who Gollum was. He was a murderer yes... but, right before Sam called him a sneak, Tolkien writes, that if you had looked closely you would have seen an old hobbit, too many years removed from his friends and his family and all that was familiar.
So, here is this bad guy. He has murdered and technically, he will murder again (Frodo by Shelob and Sam by his own hands). But, in the oil, is this complex character (just as complex as any other character in literature) that I can't help feel sorry for. I love him! He is, without a doubt, my second favorite character in literature. Sydney Carton from Tale of Two Cities being the first.
How many sons of Elrond are there in the book? I was thinking it was 2, but maybe there were 3?
My speed just tested here at
1443 kbps download (which falls between "awesome" and "insane" on the scale ;~D) and
125 kbps upload (which is only about twice as fast as a 56K modem).
Test yours there when you are home, and let me know, I am curious about my theory.
As for the copies of the film check up-thread a bit (last hour's worth of posts) for the download sites... KaZaa, IMesh, and some other place ecurbh mentioned. If you don't have cable or DSL, I am afraid it would take a week to download it, but if you are on a high speed connection, I can help explain the process if you are interested.
....please, get help. And don't try to explain it to us, either. There are some places even Hobbits should not go!
