If my memory serves me correctly (< /Iron Chef! >) book-Gandalf did touch the Ring at least once, I think he picked up the Ring after Bilbo dropped it, put it in the envelope, sealed the envelope, and then put it on the mantle. Yeah, that's what I'm referring to. So it seems like touching the ring briefly (as opposed to actually USING the ring) wouldn't necessarily ensnare someone, but using it would be extremely dangerous.

Well, It could affect his ability to resist it yes!
On the other hand, it might also have given him sufficient personal power to take out a "fledgeling" ringbearer.
I don't know enough about the ways of these rings...

was Elrond already a ring-bearer at that point in the story?Nes! I mean, yo! I mean, uhm, I don't think so. Gil-Galad was the first to bear that ring, and I think I remember reading he left it at Rivendell. So, it would have been waiting for Elrond when he got back from the battle.
To: HairOfTheDog
I hadn't even thought about Elrond's status as a ringbearer and how that would affect his ability / inability to deal with Isildur...that could be an interesting discussion in and of itself!
To: HairOfTheDog
...I saw considerable regret in Elrond's face when he retold that story.Elves are weak.
BUT, was Elrond already a ring-bearer at that point in the story?
Elrond would have had to be a ring-bearer by then since the One Ring was made for the explicit purpose of controlling the other rings.

WHERE IS OUR DANG HISTORIAN? JenB! Question!

Did I start enough discussion for ya?

By the way, has anyone else noticed, one of the two male Elves trying on a ring in the movie flashback, was the same guy wielding a spear during the final showdown with Sauron? He was Gil-Galad! :)

It's so hot in here...hurry, or my nails will curl up....HEY! - If you are going to pile on, let me assure you, you are piling on the WRONG side! - Don't let the evil take you!

Didn't Gandalf have that ring after Gil-Galad died??Hm...you know, I think this may be right. The movie showed the ringbearers at the beginning - didn't it show Galadriel, Elrond, and Gil-Galad? I know Gandalf ends up with one of the elven rings, and what other would it be?
To: ksen; JenB
No... Gandalf has the boat builder's ring.... JenB!
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
Yeah, I noticed that after my sixth or seventh viewing. I had thought the guy with the spear/sword stabbing down into the orc was Elrond.

Didn't Gandalf have that ring after Gil-Galad died?? No! Gandalf had the ring from Cirdan, the Elf at the Grey Havens who greeted him and knew where he came from (the West). "Take this ring as it may help you kindle spirits..." or something like that. It was the Ring of Fire.
By the way, does anyone remember if there were elements associated with the other two Elf rings?
To: RosieCotton; ksen
Elrond wasn't the original ringbearer of the ring he bears. Was he better than the average ring-bear?

And look! It's the Ranger!
To: RosieCotton
I want my books! Arrgghh! I have nothing left but The Hobbit - my younger siblings robbed me of all the rest, and I'm getting rusty on my facts here!

Don't listen to her RWRF, the Ring has taken her.
