1968: Richard Nixon defeated Hubert Humphrey
Probably this one - if you could vote at age 20 in 1968. Thanks.

Thanks for your support in the Smokey Backroom against the anti-religious fanatics. I have corrupted you into going to that nasty place. Orcs and Uruk-hai abound, not to mention trolls.

Say, what is it today anyway? Less than 70 posts on a weekday?
Are we all slacking off, or what?

Are we all slacking off, or what?I just got out of my second (fairly long) meeting of the day. What's your excuse? ;-)

Are we all slacking off, or what? I think we have to blame it on g'nad and 2JM for not being around so much...
or we could just bash some elves...

What's your excuse?I'm the quiet type! :)

Are we all slacking off, or what? It's what. This job thing interferes too much with my personal life!
It's 4:00! or 1600 hours for you military types.
To: Corin Stormhands
Where HAS g'nad been, anyway? Did he say goodbye, or just abandon us? He left us allll aloooone!
or we could just bash some elves...
I really shouldn't drop to that level but...I've been watching the movie again (in small doses as I have time). Last night I got to the part where Elrond does his little speech about Frodo having shown extraordinary resilience to the Ring's evil, in a kind of slimey voice - basically saying, "So...he's carried it THIS far - we might as well just let him KEEP carrying it." Creep. He's right, it SHOULD have "ended that day", but he was too much of a sissy to DO anything other than yell and stamp his pointy shoed foot.
I just feel bad for Frodo or I wouldn't be bashing. Really. But I discussed this with a couple o' my siblings and they agreed in spite of being major elf fans, so I guess it's OK to feel the way I do?

OK, I admit...that felt good...

Where HAS g'nad been, anyway? He told us he'd be gone most of this week. I think he may be back tomorrow.

Elves are weak...
To: ksen; HairOfTheDog; Anybody
OK, a series question, gang!
In the movie when Saruman is talking to Gandalf, trying to get him to join him...is he supposed to be using the power of his voice? I watched THAT part last night, too, and couldn't help wondering. He slows down and kinda stares Gandalf in the eye at one point, like he's trying to bring him under his spell.

Isn't that the point of Gandalf's realization about Saruman? I seem to recall Gandalf reacting...
To: RosieCotton; HairOfTheDog
I think Saruman may be using his voice there. I mean even I figured out Saruman was a bad guy when he came walking down his steps in his filthy looking robes.
The power of Saruman's voice must not transmit through the digital encoding process.

Well...that's when he says something about Saruman abandoning reason for madness, right?
Gandalf could stand up to the Voice, though, even in the book, right? (I don't have Two Towers and my memory is shaky on that scene...sad, I know!) Jedi mind tricks don't work on him...
To: RosieCotton
No! It is not OK to feel the way you do!
Elrond did not dictate that Frodo should continue to carry the ring! - Only observed correctly that he had so far shown more resistance to it than some MEN he knew would. He decided to hold the council so that all could decide...
Hopefully Frodo would volunteer, but would not have sent him alone! Gandalf was hinting that the ring could stay in Rivendell, and Elrond was stating only that it could not. The elves did not have the power to withstand both Mordor and Isengard. No... another solution must be found!

The power of Saruman's voice must not transmit through the digital encoding process.Ha! That's a good thing, too! Can you imagine the whole theater full of people getting messed up by watching / hearing Saruman in TTT?
