So if he were a "Chieftain" and not an official "king" and ruled for only 8 years, the Gondor folk might not have heard about him.

In the movie, I think for the sake of time... Arwen tells the audience who Aragorn is, the love story is introduced, then Legolas carries Aragorn's identification forward into the Council of Elrond.

In the book, the identifying mark is the sword that has been broken and now been reforged. In the book, Aragorn wants to go to Gondor to deliver the city by this sword since he thinks the dream that Boromir/Faramir had was a sign for him to claim his throne.

In the book, that sword is a powerful sign and only the king of Gondor could carry it.

When you said "Windows Media Player" I thought, "I've got that! Why won't it work?" Then I got a glimmer of some sort of idea in my brain and I opened up my media player and put the url of that site that does the jibberish into the open location place. It seems to want to work! It says "connecting" and then it connects and says "Sneak Peak at "The Two Towers" by Orlandomultimedia". Then it says "buffering" for a while, but then it stops. Could it be getting too many hits?

I think we'll just have to decide Boromir's recognition of Aragorn's name is one of the changes PJ made to change from a book to movie. I personally don't see how it helps, but what the hey!

I also think the movie does an inadequate job of explaining just who Boromir is and why he and Aragorn have a built-in rivalry. He is in practical terms the heir to the throne of Gondor. If Aragorn returns, he will displace Boromir's father and his entire family from their position of power.

If you know this, Boromir's dying declaration of fealty to Aragorn packs a lot more punch.

I think for the sake of time that Jackson had Boromir recognize the name. And I think you are right... we don't understand who Boromir really is. But again... time. Maybe it will be explored more in the scenes with Faramir, Denethor and Gandalf in either The Two Towers or the Return of the King.

When I write, nothing slows down a play more than when I have to go through the introduction phase... so if I can cheat there, I will. Exposition kills any momentum that you have built up. So, I think Jackson made the best choice. That's how I would have done it. You could make Aragorn the star of his own movie as you could Boromir. The characters are that richly drawn in the book. I don't envy Jackson's task of having to sift through all of that... it's like having too much information. His choices drive the story forward...

Agreed. I still think Jackson was robbed for the Adapted Screenplay Oscar. The screenplay was not only the best adapted screenplay of the year, it is the best I have seen in my life.

The winner, Beatiful Mind, was a rather routine pedestrian product, by comparison.

I liked A Beautiful Mind... and if I were voting,I would have given it best adapted screenplay. Because not only did I fall for "the lie" once, I fell for it twice. To me, that's good story telling.

But I would have given Peter Jackson Best Director because he earned it. He did make the best movie of the year. And Lord of the Rings should have been best picture. Well, Hollywood can congratulate themselves... they stayed about "crass commercialism".

I have neither read nor seen "A Beautiful Mind" but I think LotR deserved Best Adapted Screenplay. The screenwriters took Tolkien's work and translated it to the screen without losing anything in translation. It was beautiful.

Well, you may be right, but if you've never seen A Beautiful Mind, how can you judge one way or another?

Well, for one thing, I know that Tolkien was the greatest writer of the 20th century. That makes the book version of LotR better than the book version of ABM. Since I see LotR losing Best Adapted Screenplay as an affront to Tolkien, I can be as bigoted against ABM as I like. It may not be quite rational, but it's more fun this way.

I haven't read it either...as a matter of fact I didn't even know there was a book out about it!

I would think that taking a book with the depth of FOTR, written by a man whom many consider to be one of the greatest authors of the 20th century and turning it into a movie that didn't just stink would be an almost miraculous achievement. The fact that PJ was able to do this makes me feel like FOTR most certainly should have received Best Adapted Screenplay.

But then again, I think Sarah McLeod deserved Best Actress more than Hallie Berry did!
