When I write, nothing slows down a play more than when I have to go through the introduction phase... so if I can cheat there, I will. Exposition kills any momentum that you have built up. So, I think Jackson made the best choice. That's how I would have done it. You could make Aragorn the star of his own movie as you could Boromir. The characters are that richly drawn in the book. I don't envy Jackson's task of having to sift through all of that... it's like having too much information. His choices drive the story forward...

Agreed. I still think Jackson was robbed for the Adapted Screenplay Oscar. The screenplay was not only the best adapted screenplay of the year, it is the best I have seen in my life.
The winner, Beatiful Mind, was a rather routine pedestrian product, by comparison.
