The New Hobbit Hole

Welcome to The New Hobbit Hole

Concerning Hobbits

The New Hobbit Chronicles

This is a continuation of the infamous thread New Zealander Builds Hobbit Hole originally posted on January 26, 2001 by John Farson, who at the time undoubtedly thought he had found a rather obscure article that would elicit a few replies and die out. Without knowing it, he became the founder of the Hobbit Hole. For reasons incomprehensible to some, the thread grew to over 4100 replies. It became the place for hobbits and friends of hobbits to chit chat and share LoTR news and views, hang out, and talk amongst ourselves in the comfort of familiar surroundings.

In keeping with the new posting guidelines, the thread idea is continuing here, as will the Green Dragon Inn, our more structured spin-off thread, as soon as we figure out how to move all the good discussion that has been had there. As for the Hobbit Hole, we will just start fresh, bringing only a few mathoms such as the picture above with us to make it feel like home, and perhaps a walk down memory lane:

Our discussion has been light:

It very well may be that a thread named "New Zealander builds Hobbit hole" will end up being the longest Tolkien thread of them all, with some of the best heartfelt content... Sorry John, but I would have rather it had been one with a more distinguished title!… post 252 - HairOfTheDog

However, I can still celebrate, with quiet dignity, the fact that what started as a laugh about some wacko in New Zealand has mutated and grown into a multifaceted discussion of the art, literature, and philosophy that is Tolkien. And now that I've managed to write the most pompous sentence of my entire life, I agree, Rosie… post 506 - JenB

Hah! I was number 1000!! (Elvish victory dance... wait, no; that would be too flitty) … post 1001 - BibChr

Real men don't have to be afraid of being flitty! Go for it. – post 1011 – HairOfTheDog

Seventeen years to research one mystical object seems a bit excessive… post 1007 - JenB

Okay...who's the wise guy who didn't renew Gandalf's research grant?… post 1024 – Overtaxed

To the very philosophical:

…Judas Iscariot obviously was a good man, or he wouldn't have been chosen to be one of the Apostles. He loved Jesus, like all of the Apostles, but he betrayed him. Yet without his betrayal, the Passion and Crucifixion would never have occurred, and mankind would not have been redeemed. So without his self-destruction infinite good would not have been accomplished. I certainly do not mean this to be irreverant but it seems to me that this describes the character of Gollum, in the scenes so movingly portrayed above… Lucius Cornelius Sulla

To fun but heartfelt debates about the integrity and worth of some of the characters…

…Anyone else notice how Boromir treats the hobbits? He's very fond of them but he seems to think of them as children - ruffling Frodo's hair, calls them all 'little ones'. He likes them, but I don't think he really respects them… post 1536 - JenB

Yes... Tolkien told us not to trust Boromir right off the bat when he began to laugh at Bilbo, until he realized that the Council obviously held this hobbit in high esteem. What a pompous dolt… post 1538 - HairOfTheDog

…I think almost every fault of his can be traced directly back to his blindness to anything spiritual or unseen. He considers the halflings as children, because that is what they look like. He considers the only hope of the ring to be in taking it and using it for a victory in the physical realm. He cannot see what the hobbits are truly made of, he cannot see the unseen hope of what the destruction of the ring might mean--the destruction of Sauron himself, and he cannot see the unseen danger that lies in the use of the ring itself… I just feel sorry for Boromir--he is like a blind but honorable man, trying to take the right path on the road but missing the right path entirely because he simply cannot see it… post 1548 - Penny1

Boromir isn't a jerk, he's a jock… post 2401 – Overtaxed

-----------------------------------------

Oh, I think by the time Frodo reaches the Cracks, he's not even himself anymore! I think he's not only on the brink of a dangerous place physically, he's on the brink of losing himself completely during the exchange with Gollum. But for some reason, the take-over isn't complete till he actually has to throw the Ring in. The person speaking to Gollum is not Frodo, but the "Wheel of Fire" that Sam sees. After the Ring is destroyed, Frodo not only comes back to himself, but comes back with the unbearable (to him) knowledge of what it's like to be completely without compassion. I think that's why it's so important to him to be compassionate in the Shire… post 2506 - 2Jedismom

…Regarding Frodo's compassion... it's a little too much at the end. Even Merry tells him that he's going to have to quit being so darn nice. But you're right. He's learned a lesson about evil that very few ever learn since it wasn't an external lesson but an internal one. (Those kinds of lessons have the greatest impact) Not only did he totally succumb to it, but he was rather ruthless to my little Smeagol… post 2516 - carton253

Well that Frodo was a big mean bully! (to Smeagol)… post 2519 – Overtaxed

So as you can see, everything JRR Tolkien (and Peter Jackson) is welcome here in our New Row, our soon-to-be familiar New Hobbit Hole…; philosophy, opinion, good talk and frequent silliness.

Thanks, but it isn't that... It isn't directing me to good sites from advertisers, like popups... I am redirected to broken and non-existent sites... 404 errors... A click to Preview this response may take me to a 404 "Page Not Available" page at USA Today or Webshots or TORN or The New York Times...

I don't have any of the spyware/adware stuff on my machine... It is clean.

I had one virus before upgrading to XP and IE 6, but this was not described in it's list of damages (it was one of the worms that attacked instant messengers), and I have since then always kept PC-Cillan up to date.

I'm HOOOMMMME! Lord, what a trip. What an abject disaster! What a collosal waste of money. I vow to you all right here and now that I will never go to Wisconsin again nor take my children.

What a cesspool of humanity.

What's with the new format?

The whole state is a cesspool? - Where did you go? What did you do?

Welcome Back!

OK, that sounds pretty weird... and maybe more like a bug than a virus or adware. I have a lot of further questions on it, but if you'll please ping me to your thread I'll wait and discuss it there.

They waited until you were gone to change it... that's what you get for leaving... ;)

I don't know about the whole state, but my husband's family is an embarrassment. It's a long long story, but suffice it to say, they are a bunch of liberals, living a liberal lifestyle where anything goes (drunkeness, family violence, vulgar language). One of the highlights of the trip was when my MIL showed me the picture of her 50 something year old sister (my husband's aunt), with her girlfriend (oh, uh...significant other you know) and guess where her picture was? In the LUTHERAN church directory!!!

We went to the bank and I just cringed when my hubby told the teller our last name.

Another highlight was when my brother-in-law started having a bad golf game and stopped just short of hitting my husband with a club.

They all hate me, because I encouraged their son to quit drinking and finish college. Prior to that he was a good drunk with no values just like the rest of them. The final straw was when he converted from ELCA to SBC! It's like he's a hot poker in the family.

HeHeHe....

Sounds like a family reunion alright... not mine, but ones I have heard about! Does your husband share these views? - Or are these views yours for us to see only?

Yeah, he shares them...it's embarrassing for him and saddens him. When I met him 15 years ago, he had not even called his parents in over a year. I encouraged him to get back in touch with his family. Not too long ago, he asked me why I ever encouraged him and I felt so bad. He's going to have to go through the heartache of just giving up on them all over again but this time he isn't soaking the disappointment in beer.

It's been coming for a long time, this final staw. He has a fairly tolerable sister in Minnesota. We'll probably go there now and then "in passing" to see her and his mom.

Hey 2JM, I'm sorry to hear how your trip went, but am glad everyone made it home safely.

To All: I just received some really good news from my ma today. It seems that with the new cineplex opening up in May, one of the older theatres in town is converting to a $1.00 theatre. I'll give you all three guesses as to one of the movies they are bringing in. ;^)

Welcome back, 2JM! We've missed you!

I saw Minority Report today. In short, one of the best films I've ever seen. It was not a lot like the short story it was based on, but that was ok. Kinda like Blade Runner is nothing like the book (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep) but they're both great. Anyway, see it if you want a good movie with some scifi added in. It made me forget that I hate Tom Cruise!

How are your days going?

Glad you're safely back 2JM. Just remember, as my wife and I remind each other often...you don't choose your family.

The saving grace of us is that both side irritate us.

Hi everyone! I'm back from being a social person. :) I didn't poke anyone, didn't get in any arguments, didn't cause any trouble (an you know how hard that is!), and the food was good.

2JM, sorry about your trip. I guess I'm lucky....we pretty much get along in our family. Glad you're back!

Mine was good! We got the yard mowed and is being watered right now. Watched The Princess Bride again with the boys. Planted some rubarb we got up north and harvested the onions that the bunnies had eaten all the tops off of.

I just got the boys in bed. I'm looking forward to a nice scub in the shower then a soak in the bathtub with some of my Moonlight Path from Bath and Body Works, with my FOTR that I've started (seventh reading since the movie came out, first since finishing the Silmarillion for the second time.)

LOL! You asked! ;-)

I asked because I was curious! - I have very picky bunnies here... I had some salad that was wilting and there was a lot of it so I laid it out in the paddock for the bunnies that hang out there.

They ate all of one kind of lettuce, but left the other fancy darker green lettuce that was in there. They were very choosey... The horses won't eat either kind of lettuce, which surprises me.

We used to have rhubarb when I was growing up! - I ate it raw... Didn't like it cooked, and didn't like it when mom mixed it with other stuff in jam.

So did we. We would chop some off, bring it inside, wash it up, and dip it in a bowl of sugar. Yum!
