"The ballots are counted. The maps are drawn. Democrats will control the House and the Senate when the new Congress gavels in. That is the premise the country just handed Republicans, and the Senate still has a few weeks of majority power left. John Thune and the usual clutch of RINOs are treating that window like an inconvenience instead of the last clean shot they will get for years."

I know the results are bad, but are we now at the level where we take bad ideas that have become CRAZY ideas?
This is like shooting yourself in the foot and deciding “Welp, I’m bleeding out. Maybe shooting myself in the head will fix it.”
I agree. The long knives need to come out for Thune if he refuses eliminate the filibuster and pass the SAVE act.
What is to prevent the next Congress from repealing it?
yeh- and hair will grow on my bald head bu tomorrow morning...Thune is a POS...
Hard to find 50 senators that will give up the power of the filibuster.
Hard to find 50 senators that will give up the power of the filibuster.
A veto by Trump.
Trump’s Veto
They don’t call the Republicans the stupid party for no reason. Although I pin a big part of the election losses on the effects of the Iran war, I think the senate Republicans ahould take the blame for complete inaction to pass the President’s agenda.
This filibuster rule is such BS andit has worked to our advantage, the Dems will dump it and use it as a sledgehammer on the American people.
> What is to prevent the next Congress from repealing it? <
Trump’s veto.
Anyway, I don’t think eliminating the filibuster will happen. Senators like Thune still view the Senate as an elite, old-time club. Must respect tradition!
Just you wait, Senator Thune. Wait until January of next year. The radical Democrats will show you how much they respect tradition.
Same as my first thought, “Why does he think Thune wants to save America?”
Thune needs to be primaried.
What is the Save America Act?
What is it really?
He is a POS, a worthless RINO.
Call jim and rub it in: (202) 224-2321.
He hates that. He ran against Daschle citing his Washington swamp membership. Upon defeating Daschle, Thune became a full fledged member himself.
Unless Thune accomplishes anything meaningful before the Commies take over, Trump should just ignore him from now on.
LOL Thune aint doing jack sh*t..please, he’s thrilled at the results he will probably vote to impeach Trump, he could care less he knows he is going to be thrown out in 2028 anyway
The filibuster was a rule change in the Senate after the passage of the 17th amendment in 1913, since the states no longer had direct control over their Senators.
The 17th amendment essentially nullified the compacts clause, which was the vehicle that Senators were expected to operate as they negotiated business compacts between states with common local interests. States negotiating compacts such as mineral and water rights, port access for lumber industries, fishing boundaries, etc., would only impact those states that were parties to the interstate commerce agreements; states that were not parties to the compact would have no reason to interfere with them. In fact, a state legislature would question their Senator who would involve himself in an issue on the far side of the country, because that Senator would be viewed as irrational when others need to make a compact with his state.
Post-17th amendment, everything became nationalized as the party interests superceded individual state interests. The fililbuser rule became necessary to prevent a majority of party-controlled states from negating the smaller states, and was introduced as Senate Rule XXII in 1917, four years after passage of the 17th amendment.
The rule was instrumental in the transition of the Senate from a body of state ambassadors with portfolios to make compacts between the states, to a body of party apparatchiks who needed to organize into blocs for election purposes every six years. The cloture rule effectively turned every issue into a national party power fight. Repealing the 17th amendment and returning control of the Senate to the states would go a long way towards nullifying the need for the filibuster.
