Don’t forget to tip your robots.
A recent TikTok has exposed an airport store for prompting customers to select an 18% tip at a self-checkout kiosk.
Dr. Clay Moss, a longevity specialist, recently posted a TikTok where a self-service payment terminal automatically nudged him to tip. In an undisclosed airport, the doctor was stunned when he tried to purchase a bottle of water — which was already overpriced — and saw that he was automatically encouraged to tip — 18%.
Dr. Moss showed the store’s kiosk, which revealed the software — that seemingly uses a preset function — prompting customers to leave a 10%, 15% or 18% gratuity using an automatic tipping feature.
While he has seen the feature at other types of retailers, one major factor was missing — a worker. The airport store was completely self-service with not a single employee near.
Dr. Moss then asked two simple questions — has tipping culture gotten out of hand and who is the money going to?
“Who is this automatic 18% tip that I have to click out of for? Who am I tipping here? Is this what we’ve come to?” Dr. Moss said on TikTok.
He went on to say that in most cases, tips go to the staff associated with the store — like cashiers, attendants or shared tips for all the workers to split at the end of their shift. But what happens when the checkout machine is owned and operated by a third party?

Aksed. My answer? No.
You can get a 40 bottle case at Walmart for $5.97.
“dealerships are always shady. no exception”
Amen to that one.
One of many reasons when I actually go to a dealership to buy a vehicle (which I hate like poison BTW) I always get a “VIP check” from my credit union I’m going to finance the car through anyway.
That elevates a myriad of PITA issues at time of purchase.
Umm..
If you pay in cash, they instantly get your money.
I’m sure somehow it’s being funneled to Democrat coffers....
Yeah, but dealing with cash is a lot more work.
Certain stadiums have atms where you can convert to their currency.
That's filtered tap water. I'm sticking to my glacier water that comes from the source. If I'm down in America I get spring water, like Arrowhead.
Whoever is behind this is counting on people not paying attention.
Agree that’s about half of the population it’s what keeps fraud alive.
And people on a business card are not personally paying it.
Do you ever taste penguin urine in it?
Everything is 2-3X even normal prices at the airport.
I was at O’hare airport in July. Beginning of a business trip on a Sunday.
I had 2 hours to kill. Ordered a Bloody Mary at a bar. Including tip it was $26.95.
For one drink. I was glad I was on an Expense Account.
The only way i tip is if i see some stuff
Not if he’s a U.S.-born citizen, educated at an American college.
I often click 0 out of annoyance.
No, there are no penguins in Alaska.
The issue is the software used has a feature that allows you to ask for tips or not ask. By default it’s usually on. So in situations where tip is really not expected they should turn it off...but that’s extra work and who doesn’t want “free” money? So they never turn it off.
That is very common here. They do always tell you, usually with a note on the menu, about a surcharge for using credit. I have taken to always bringing cash to a place that I’m not familiar with their surcharge policy.
It’s not the restaurant you should be mad at. It’s the CC companies continuing to increase the percentage they take from the restaurant to process the payments.
I’m not the only one. Many of my (like me, cheap-ass) family and friends are doing this. I actually like it. It’s putting up and unintentional roadblock to going to an all cashless society.

Try carrying that 24 pack on a airliner.
Just ANOTHER REASON I no longer fly. I’ve flown probably over 100,000 miles in my lifetime, and I’m done. The groping I received at SeaTac Airport in Seattle, when we were flying to Tampa to visit my wife’s sister several years ago, did it for me. No more! If I cannot get there by car, I ain’t departing.
