As polar ice melts in the Arctic, shipping lanes are opening up, making the region a new zone of superpower competition. Writer Rana Foroohar got an up-close look aboard the USS Healy, a Coast Guard icebreaker. She says that traversing the North Pole by ship — once a "largely conceptual" route — is now becoming a "real possibility" for two or three weeks a year.
"If you are taking one of these Arctic routes, you can save as much as 40% of the time it would take you to go from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and depending on the price of oil, that's a heck of a lot of money," she says. "China and Russia together are clearly trying to make the top of the world an area over which they have the most interest."
In her new book, Sea Change: America's New Great Game in the Arctic Circle, Foroohar makes the case that the "High North" may become as critical to world shipping as the Suez or Panama canals. But she also notes that beneath the Arctic waters are large deposits of oil, natural gas and rare earth minerals, as well as underwater cables, which carry a large part of the world's intercontinental information flow.
"Undersea cables have become a real touchstone in wars and conflicts around the world," she says. "So you are seeing a race to lay down new cable, and who can get there fastest, and then who can potentially commercialize and even militarize areas where those cables have been laid."
"Rusting rivers" are increasingly common in the Brooks Range of northern Alaska, the result of thawing permafrost. The orange color is caused by naturally occurring iron, but it also often indicates elevated levels of heavy metals.
Foroohar describes the Arctic Circle as one of the few areas of the globe where countries and companies can still "hunt" for territory and "duke it out potentially with rivals." And she predicts more conflict in the coming decades as the region continues to warm.
"There is going to be more commerce done through this area. There is gonna be greater military interest in the area, and all of that matters because it really is in America's backyard," she says. "I just think that everything in the High North is going to be higher priority for America in the future."

I have. Extensively.
Read my instructions again, carefully. The ice-cube is part of the original 1-cup charge of water.
you're adding an ice cubes' worth of water to a glass.
No, I'm not.
Seriously: read it again. Carefully.
Finally ... you actually made my point, without realizing it ... freezing or thawing part of a sample of water doesn't change the water level. The ice displaces the same amount of water it "displaced" when it was liquid.
Now ... aside from all the panic-mongering, arctic and antarctic sea-ice freeze fall/winter and thaw every spring/summer. Every year. With no effect on sea level.
Opposing bad science (global warming) with bad science does nobody any good.
And that is why melting ice doesn't translate to sea level rise (as you asked in #2).
Because the Arctic ice cap is already floating, and because it is not melting at any greater rate than usual. Beyond that, I don’t suppose they mention the relevance of Trump’s Greenland initiative.
Wait until they find out that Trump is going to melt the ice and grow crops.
In fact, frozen water displaces about 5% more than its liquid
equivalent. Therefore, if all the sea ice in the world
melted, sea levels would go down.
Heh, I have altered my views on this a little bit. There was once a time when I thought they didn't "have a clue", but...I have since concluded that, apart from the brainless, zombie-like denizens that inhabit the mass of their movements, the people at the top know very well that it is all a hoax-that certainly explains Obama and other Leftists buying oceanfront property.
Interestingly, I have been following this kind of concept for decades and have seen proposals that could be made profitable, just the concept would be sure to drive them absolutely spittle-lipped, bug-eyed unhinged!
I actually come close to breaking out in open laughter as my brain presents images of outraged, head-exploding Leftist drones who go insane at this "new" proposal by Trump.
I would be equally amused to find that Trump actually would propose this just as a trolling ploy to make them drive off the emotional roads!
Why else would we call it Green-land?
No ... it occupies more volume. That's why some of it is above the liquid level.
Try the ice-cube experiment.
Next time I need to take a boat from Alaska to Norway I will take into account this article. It’s a really important issue.
Let's see...
Immediate symptoms would be intense thirst, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea , weakness, and muscle cramps, followed by rising blood sodium, further cellular dehydration, confusion, restlessness, lethargy, headaches, and high strain on the cardiovascular system as blood volume effectively drops. In the end, you would see brain cell shrinkage that can tear vessels, seizures, coma, kidney overload/injury, organ failure, and death.
My question is, if a Leftist is drinking salt water, how would one be able to clinically tell the difference?
It’s Two Days Before
The Day After Tomorrow!
Well you know what they say; Everyday gets better than the next.
(how would one be able to
clinically tell the difference?)

For the same reason that the ice in your iced tea doesn’t raise the level of tea in your glass as it melts.
Frozen H2O is not as dense as liquid H2O- that’s why ice floats. A pound of ice also takes up much more space than a pound of warm water. As it melts the volume of space it takes up decreases and the water around it fills the difference.
And the volume increase is closer to 10% (9.05%)
That is a key concept in "specific gravity". So, If you completely immerse an ice cube weighing 9.05 grams in 100 ml of water, the level of water would display in a measuring vessel 110 ml of water (1 gram water = 1 milliliter) but when the ice melts, it would display 109.05 ml of water.
LOL, my chemistry was many years ago, but I think that is correct.
LOL
Aren’t they all assault weapons?
Evil weapons of mass destruction to hear the loony left tell it.
Roman era concrete piers are still above sea level after 2000 years. Sea levels have not changed to date. Now we are to believe they will rise x meters?
Yeah, I doubt it.
