Christa Pike is conscious and speaking after she survived Tennessee’s execution attempt, her attorneys say

Christa Pike, a Tennessee inmate who survived Tennessee’s attempt to execute her, is conscious and speaking as she continues to receive medical care at a hospital, according to a statement from her attorneys.

“Against all odds, Christa Pike is conscious, speaking, and continues to receive critical medical care. Despite the severe damage she endured to her arms, she is still handcuffed and shackled to the bed. Her recovery is medically unprecedented. Her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery,” her attorneys said in a statement.

Pike survived two ostensibly lethal doses of pentobarbital last week after prison staff tried twice to carry out her planned execution for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer.

Her next legal move will be to declare that she was executed, and is free from further punishment.

I remember reading about one death row inmate who stopped drinking water a few days before his execution and they also had a difficult time finding a vein. Seems this is in their playbook now. Time to switch to bullets, a rope or the gas chamber.

I had blood drawn on Monday, and talked with the lab worker about Pike's case. She agreed that something was amiss. Labs can only drawn blood from arms and hands if necessary. She said the medical execution team should have been qualified to inject her via her carotid in her neck, or femoral artery in her thigh.
