CNBC Floor Commentator Outburst "Obama are you Listening?"(SILENT MAJORITY ALERT) 2/19/2009, 5:35:24 AM · by longtermmemmory · 361 replies · 14,090+ views CNBC.com ^ | 2/18/2009 | Rick Santelli
From today:
“State Rep. Gina Hinojosa, the Democratic nominee for governor, is promising to send each Texas household a $1,500 check drawn from the state’s rainy day fund if she defeats Gov. Greg Abbott this November.“
Not a peep. From anyone.
it does give one a very queasy feeling doesn’t it? it’s like there’s no ethical or common sense in most people anymore. it’s come back to straight cash for your vote. even Trump is apparently promising tariff money for votes.
we’ve sure come a long way from the tea party and fiscal responsibility in gov’t; God help us. and i don’t think Rick would approve at all.
Yet, Santelli chose to say literally nothing about Trump’s statement. Interesting, don’t you think, since Santelli had two weeks to do it and obviously couldn’t have cared less if he took heat for it since he k kw he was retiring.
That makes me think there might be a reason to believe your assumption is flawed.
I should add, Santelli is a *huge* supporter of Trump’s tariffs in the first place (I’m guessing you’re probably not) so it probably also wouldn’t be a surprise if, though silent on the matter, Santelli supports the idea of returning the money to the people. The point of the tariffs is to incentive the purchase of American made goods over foreign, not to fill the government coffers - so giving it back so Americans can purchase more American goods makes sense. Otherwise, Washington will just spend it on more stupid crap.
And that thought above is independent of whether or not you think tariffs are good - just a position on what should be done with the money.
The Texas rainy day fund is *totally* different. That’s tax money raised for the purpose of government spending. That Texas has a rainy day fund instead of debt is a good fiscal policy. And while I think they should keep it - for a rainy day - I don’t see a huge problem with returning it to the taxpayers in Texas. If Abbott thinks Texas should keep it, he should have to defend it’s existence. I sure hope the Socialist doesn’t win, but that doesn’t mean Republicans shouldn’t have to defend their policies.
And, by the way, Hinojosa made that promise many weeks before Trump’s comment at the convention, not ‘from today’. Since the convention was in Texas and Trump directly addressed the governor’s race in his speech it’s entirely possible he was trolling Hinojosa.
